Bernard Frederick Hohman

Bernard (pronounced BERN-erd) Hohman grew up on the family farm a few miles from Fulda. He met Leona Crum at a church dance around 1934 and, according to Leona, "it was you-know-what at first sight." Leona, who had recently graduated high school, had a job, but Bernard didn't so wedding plans were put on hold. Bernard eventually found work in Stark County. He bought the Hohman family farm his parents and subsequently went overseas in World War II. Bernard's father passed away while Bernard was in Europe, and he was not able to come home for the funeral. Not long after his father's death, Bernard landed at Normandy on D-Day. The event disturbed him so much that he never spoke about his experiences during the war.

Bernard and Leona married shortly after he was discharged, and they moved onto the farm that had once been his parents'. The farm had a battery operated radio, but it did not have a phone, and there was no electricity until shortly before their third child, Andy, was born. Immediately after they got electricity (on 14 Feb 1949), the Hohmans went out and bought three appliances: a refrigerator, a stove and an iron. It was a Valentines Day that Leona long remembered.

Bernard was a brittle diabetic. Despite the fact that he took insulin shots daily, diabetic shock and coma were always a concern. When Bernard worked the farm on the tractor, Leona frequently went with him so that he would not go into a potentially fatal diabetic shock alone.

A terrible snowstorm hit the county in the winter of 1950. Snow drifted as high as the second story windows on the farm. Bernard had a difficult time getting to the barn to care for the cattle. After a few days, Bernard began to run low on insulin. Reaching town -- 15 miles away by road -- was out of the question, and they had no phone. The Hohmans waded through the deep snow to the crest of a hill, where their yells could be heard at the neighboring farm. The neighbors then struggled through the snow to the next hill where they yelled to the next farm. The message continued via "yell-o-phone" until it was finally relayed to town. At that point, a county employee came to the farm with insulin for Bernard.

One day in the early 1950s, Bernard had taken the three oldest boys (who were small children at the time) out on an errand. Upon their return, Bernard spotted something as he drove up to the house. "Look, boys! A cat! Can you catch it?" he asked. The children tumbled out of the car and gave chase. Sadly, they caught it, and (as Bernard well knew), it wasn't a cat; it was a skunk. This adventure did not earn Bernard any brownie points with Leona. It took many days to get the stench off the boys.

Shortly after their youngest child was born, the Hohmans bought Leona's parents farm about two and a half miles from Caldwell on Route 564 in Noble County.

The Crum farm was on lower ground than the Hohman farm had been, and some of the land was swampy. Bernard contacted the county Soil Conservation department to rectify the situation. They began to dig a drainage ditch. Bernard wasn't convinced that the county employees were doing the best possible job, and he went into the ditch to inspect it. The ditch collapsed, burying Bernard. By the time his sons were able to dig him out, an ambulance was on the scene and took him to the Intensive Care Unit at Good Samaritan Hospital in Zanesville. Initially, he appeared to be making a recovery, but after a week he took a turn for the worse and he eventually succumbed to his injuries.

Bernard Hohman's obituary appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, OH) newspaper on October 19, 1973 CALDWELL MAN DIES Bernard F. Hohman, 58, of Caldwell route 4 died at 10:30
p.m. Wednesday in Good Samaritan Medical Center where
he had been a patient three weeks. He was admitted after
sustaining injuries in an earth cave-in at his home where he
was digging a drainage ditch to the house. Born in Noble County, Oct. 12, 1915, he was a son of
Maurice and Teresa Heil Hohman. Mr. Hohman was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church
at Fulda. He was a veteran of World War II. Survivors include his widow, the former Leona Crum; three
sons, John, a teacher at Rosecrans High School, James of
Marietta and Andrew of St. John Vianney Seminary at Bloom-
ingdale; four daughters, Mrs. Patrick (Teresa) Paul of Corning,

brothers, Albert of Akron, George of Canton, Francis of Louis-
ville, Joseph of Caldwell route 4 and Clement of East pike, a
brother, Fr. Andrew Hohman and a sister Nora Warner, are
deceased. The body is at Brubach Funeral Home in Summerfield and
will be taken to Murphy Funeral Home in Caldwell where friends
may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and where Rosary will be
recited at 8 p.m. today. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary's
church at Fulda with Rev. Fr. Walter A. Heinz officiating. Burial
will be in the church cemetery.

Leona Margaret Crum

Leona Crum grew up on the family farm on 564 near Caldwell. The family attended church in Caldwell. Leona held several jobs after graduating from high school. She worked as a legal secretary, and for the soil conservation office, and she occasionally worked as a substitute teacher.

When the war came, all three of Leona's brothers were in the service. She left her job and came back home to help her widowed mother on the farm. Shortly after she moved back home, the local War Price and Rationing Office came and asked Leona to come work for them. The told her that there was no one else in the area who had the office qualifications and background that she did. Leona declined, saying that she would not be able hold down a job and still help her mother. The Rationing Office persisted, however, and eventually they wore Leona down. She went to work for them until Bernard Hohman was discharged.

Leona lived on the farm with her youngest daughter Rita (who has Downs Syndrome) for seven years after Bernard's death. In 1982, her children were concerned for her and Rita, so they helped find a house in Zanesville for her.

In 2000, Leona underwent open heart surgery. Doctors later told her that she nearly died and they had to revive her twice during the operation. Leona credits her survival with her desire to continue caring for Ruth.

Leona M. Hohman, 98 of Zanesville, died Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at Beckett House in New Concord following a brief illness. She was born Friday, November 5, 1915 in Noble County, Ohio the daughter of John Crum and Agnes (Shockling) Crum. She married Bernard F. Hohman on Tuesday, January 8, 1946. Leona was a faithful and dedicated Catholic. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Fulda for 65 years and a current member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church. She was a member of St. Nicholas Women’s Guild. Leona was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family. Leona devoted the last 60 years of her life to caring for her daughter: Rita Marie. Leona is survived by three sons: John Hohman from Zanesville, James (Mary Jo) Hohman of Hudson and Andrew (Donna Proctor) Hohman of Indianapolis; four daughters: Teresa (Patrick) Paul of Zanesville, Mary (Terry) Finley of Zanesville, Martha (Lyn) Goslin of Newark and Rita Marie Hohman of the home; fifteen grandchildren: Jessica Hohman, Amy Figliuolo, Andrew (Jaylene) Hohman, Xiamara Hohman, Benjamin Hohman, Moriah Hohman, Nicholas Hohman, Stephanie (Nick) D’Amico, Brian (Kelley) Paul, Tara (Nat) Phillips, Jennifer (Robert) Ziel, Meghan Finley, Michael Goslin, David Goslin, Michelle Goslin;20 great grandchildren; one brother: Paul (Stella) Crum of Woodsfield; one sister-in-law: Mary Crum and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
