Selected Families and Individuals

Notes

Jacob James Weisend

To researcher Mark Haren, records conflict on place of birth: Germany vs. Ohio.. The 1880 and 1900 census say Ohio.

Data also conflict on date of death. Gravestone picture in Mark L. Haren's possession, from St. John The Baptist Cemetery, Miltonsburg, Monroe, Ohio which was received from Sister Mary Ann Froechlich of Woodsfield, Monroe, Ohio shows death date as 1915.

In 1880, farmer Jacob Weisend (36) lived in Seneca Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with his wife Laney (32) and children Adam (7), Laura (5), Clement (3), and Theodore (4 months). Only Adam attended school.

In 1900, Jacob Weisend (55) owned a farm in Seneca Twp.where he lived with his wife of 30 years, Magdelena (50), and children Adam (27), Clemence (23), Theodore (20), Clara (17), Isabella (15), Malinda (12), Alexander (11), and Lawrence (6). Isabella and Malinda attended school for seven months during the previous year; their brother Alexander attended school for only four months during that time. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Francis Snyder and John W. Miller.

At the time of the 1910 census, Jacob (68) and Lanie (61) Weisend lived in Seneca Twp. with three of their children: Malinda (23), Alexander (21) and Lourena (17). Neighboring farms were those of widows Jane Carpenter and Eliza Snyder.

Obituary (source: Hartley)
Jacob Weisand, aged 74 years died at his home Kuhn December 27, 1916 from
dropsy which disease he had been afflicted for four years and confined to his bed
for 9 months. He leaves to mourn his death a widow, four sons, Adam, Alex and
Dora and five daughters, Mrs. Charles Wires of Florida, A.J. Schumacher of Woods-
field, Mrs. Simon Kuhn of Kuhn and Misses Lorena and Malinda of the home. The
funeral was held Saturday and interment made in the Miltonsburg Catholic Cemetery

"Dropsy" is short for hydropsy, which means edema or fluid retention. This could be due to heart failure, kidney disease, or other factors.

Magdalena Schehl

Magdelena spoke English, but could not read or write. At the time of the 1900 census, all nine of Magdelena Weisend's children were living. However, her eight year old son Lawrence is not listed with the family, nor is he with them in the 1910 census. The 1880 census gives her birthplace as Bavaria, Germany; in the 1900 and 1910 census, her birthplace was given as Ohio. Immigration records indicate that she was born in Germany.

Adam J. Weisend

Living in Belle Valley, Noble Co., OH in 1954.

Lawrence M. Weisend

Lawrence Weisend is not included with the family in the 1900 census, nor is he listed as a surviving sibling in the 1954 death notice of his sister, Isabelle Weisend Schumacher. (He would have been about eight years old in 1900.)

Lorena M. Weisend

Lorena Weisend never married. She was a resident of Monroe County, Ohio at the time of her death. Gravestone located in St. John The Baptist Cemetery by Nettie S. Nau, showing spelling of given name to be Lorena. Her name is spelled Laurena in the 1900 census.

Frank Roman Zwick

Frank Zwick did not live with his father and younger siblings at the time of the 1920 census.

In 1930, newlyweds Frank and Irene Zwick rented a farm adjacent to Irene's parents in Seneca Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Frank was employed as a laborer doing odd jobs.

Irene Marie Smithberger

Researcher Betty Hartley lists Irene as a "stepchild." This implies that only one of the couple (Celia Weisend and Henry Smithberger) is her biological parent. Irene's birthdate and Henry and Celia's wedding date do not support Hartley's claim that Irene is a stepchild.

The wedding announcement of Irene Smithberger and Frank Zwick was published in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 4 Nov 1929:
SUMMERFIELD, Nov. 3 - Miss Irene Smithberger, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Smithberger and Frank Zwick, son of the
late Mr. and Mrs. Leo Zwick, both of Lewisville R. F. D., were
united in marriage Tuesday morning in St. Joseph’s Catholic
church, Burkhart. Rev. Father Joseph Finan performed the
ceremony in the presence of a number of relatives and friends.
The couple was attended by the bride’s brother and sister,
Herman and Miss Geneva Smithberger.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Zwick are highly esteemed young people
and popular in Catholic circles and will have the felicitations of
many friends.
On Tuesday evening a reception was held at the Smithberger
home in honor of the newly weds with two hundred guests
present.
Dancing and other social amusements were enjoyed. Music
for the evening was furnished by Fred Youtz of Caldwell, Joe
Brister, Miles Okey and Edward Youtz. Mr. and Mrs. Zwick

He lived there with his wife of four years, Alice (26) and two sons, Frank (1) and James (3 months). Also living in the house, but numbered as a separate family, is a married woman named Elizabeth Carpenter (58). The relationship column is illegible, but it begins with "Mot." It is too long to be "mother, but it might be "mother in law."

At the time of the 1910 census, widower Leo Zwick (37) lived in Seneca Twp., Monroe Co., Ohio with his children Frank (11 James (10), Marie (8), and Ralph (6).

In 1920, 47 year old widowed farmer Leo Zwick lived on a farm that he owned in Seneca Twp. With him lived his children James (19), Marie (18), and Raphael (16). None of the children attended school.

Joseph T. Burkhart

abt 1856 -- 1860 census

In 1900, Joseph Burkhart (40) rented a farm in Seneca Twp., Monroe County, Ohio where he lived with his wife of 17 years Catherine (39) and daughters Anna L. (15) and Christina (8). Anna attended school for five months during the previous year, but Christina did not go to school at all. Also living in the household was a unmarried Bavarian-born boarder named Peter Hammell (53) who worked as a blacksmith. Joseph did not know where hsi parents were born... the census taker wrote both "Byron" (Bavaria) and "Ohio" for his fathter's place of birth, and "Unknown" for his mother's. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to John Robinson and Peter Weisend.

Albert S. Ritterbeck

Dates of birth and death (from Social Security death index) have not been confirmed. Ohio death certificate indicates that Albert was a resident of Stark Co., OH at the time of his death.

In 1930, 35 year old Albert S. Ritterbeck owned a farm in Marion Twp., Noble Co., OH. He lived there with his second wife, Bertha (36) and children Bernard L. (11), Clarence G. (8), Paul H. (2 yrs 4 mos), and Roman W. (6 mos.). The oldest two children attended school. Adjacent farms in the census were those of Howard Warner and James Osbourne.

Marie Ann Fisher

According to the 1930 census entry for her daughter Lucy Ritterbeck, Marian Fisher Ritterbeck was born in West Virginia.

Records conflict: Delores Snider's book states that Maria Fisher was born in 1897 and died the same year. However, the 1910 census lists one child for this couple: a 13 year old adopted daughter named Marie.

From death certificate:
Name: Marie Ann Fisher Ritterbeck
Age: 28 years 7 days
Occupation: House Work
Birth: 26 Jul 1896, West Va.
Marital status Married
Spouse: Albert S. Ritterbeck
Father: John Fisher, Ohio

The deceased's name is written "Marie Ann Fisher" on the death certificate. The word "Ritterbeck" was apparently added later in different handwriting and with a different pen.
