George Burkhart

George served in the Union Army during the Civil War; Pvt Co A Regiment 1 WVA La. He enlisted 7 March 1864 and served until 31 July 1865; a total of 1 yr 3 mo 24 days.

In 1880, Geo. (34) and Elizabeth (32) Burkhart lived in Center Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with children Annie (9), M. Josephine (7), Willie (5), Godfred (4), Agnes (4), Benj. G. (3), and John A. (1). Only Annie and Josephine attended school.

At the time of the 1900 census, George Burkhard (54) and his wife Elizabeth (52), rented a farm in Center Twp. Members of their household were their children Clara (15), Francis J. (14), Helen (12) and Margaret C. (8). Francis, Helen and Margaret attended school.

George Burkhart suffered from dementia and paralysis.

Obituary: (from Betty Hartley; exact source unknown)
The death of Mr. George Burkhart an aged citizen and Civil War Veteran,
occurred at his home on North Lincoln Avenue Wednesday night after several
years of affliction and infirmities of age.
The deased was born near Miltonsburg, April 2, 1846 and on June 10,
1869, he was married to Elizabeth Hunkler who passed away in November
1915. To this union, fourteen children were born, eight of whom are living.
They are: Mrs. Anna Snook, Chicago; Mrs. Josephine Ferrell, Miss Clara
Burkhart, Newark, New Jersey; William Burkhart, Washington State; Mrs.
Agnes McFadden, East Pittsburgh; Mrs. Catherine Warner, Caldwell; Francis
Burkhart, Denora, PA; Mrs. Margaret Damsel, Barnesville.
He also leaves one sister and one brother: Mrs. Barbara Hunkler, Barnes-
ville, and Mr. Adam Burkhart, Woodsfield.
Mr. Burkhart was a member of the GAR having enlisted in Wheeling in Feb-
ruary 1863 in Co. A. 1st West Virginia Lt. Artillery, serving through the war.
On December 12, 1916, Mr. Burkhart married Mrs. Katherine Tschappat
of Harrison, Arkansas, who also survives him.
Funeral will be held at the Church of the Assumption, where the deceased
was a devout member and worshipped there as long as he was able to attend.
Services will probably be held at 9 o'clock Friday morning and burial made in
the Catholic Cemetery.

According to his death certificate, George Burkhart was a retired hotel keeper. His death cetificate also states that his widow's name was Elizabeth (the name of his first wife), not Katherine (as stated in the obituary). The death certificate informant was Mrs. Paul Damsel of Barnesville (George's daughter, Margaret).

Elizabeth Hunkler

The 1880 census states that Elizabeth Burkhart was born in Ohio. This conflicts with the 1900 census her obituary, which identify her as a native of Pennsylvania. Her parents were from Germany. In 1900, ten of Elizabeth's fourteen children were still living, according to the census.

Obituary (from Betty Hartley; exact source unknown):
Mrs. George Burkhart, formerly an esteemed woman of this place,
died at a Wheeling Hospital, Frday morning, following an operation
which was performed about two weeks ago.
The decedent's maiden name was Elizabeth Hunkler, and she was
born at Pittsburgh, sixty-three years ago. She was a member of the
Catholic Church and lived a life true to her faith and belief, striving at
all times to do her duty, and never sparing herself in the effort to do
good in the world. She was a good wife and most excellent mother,
who found her greatest happiness in home life.
Besides her husband she is survived by eight children: Mrs. Harry
Snooks of New York, Mrs. David McFadden, Mrs. M.J. Ferrel and
Miss Clara Burkhart of Pittsburgh, Miss Katherine Burkhart of Pitts-
burgh, Mrs. Paul Damsel of this city, William Burkhart of Canada, and
J. H. Burkhart of Donora, PA.
She also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Katherine Miller of Missouri, Mrs.
Darr and Mrs. March of Pittsburgh, and one brother, John Hunkler of
this place.
The body was brought here for burial and funeral services were held
Saturday, conducted by Rev. Wm. Robbins. Burial in the Catholic Cem-
etery.

Emma Burkhart

Emma is not listed with her parents and siblings in the 1880 census. She would have been about 9 years old. Several explanations for her absence are possibile:
1) Emma may have died before 1880.
2) Emma may have been living with another family in 1880.
3) Emma and Anna may be the same person.
Some evidence exists to support the third hypothesis: Emma and Anna were both born in February -- Emma in 1871, according to Hartley; and Anna in 1872, according to the 1900 census. However, the census birth date may be incorrect because it is less than nine months ahead of the next younger sibling's birthdate.

Godfred Burkhart

Birth order of Godfred, William and Agnes Burkhart has not been confirmed. The 1880 census shows that Agnes and Godfred are both 4 years old, suggesting they might be twins. However, researcher Betty Hartley has Godfred born in 1874, William in 1875, and Agnes in 1876. Gotfred has not been found in any census after 1880. He is not listed as a surviving child in his father's 1929 obituary.

Raymond Peter Smithberger

From the Zanesville Times Recorder, 7 Dec 1925

MAY FACE MANSLAUGHTER CHARGES AS MAN HIS AUTOMOBILE STRUCK DIES
CALDWELL, O., Dec. 6 - Raymond Smithberger, 20, of near Summerfield, may face a manslaughter charge as the result of the death of John Miller, 78, East Union, who died late Sunday as the result of injuries sustained Saturday afternoon when struck by an automobile driven by the youth. Smithberger is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Smithberger, who live between Carlisle and Summerfield.
The accident occurred about 5 o’clock Saturday afternoon about seven miles east of Caldwell, near East Union. Miller was struck by the car and it passed over his body. He was taken to the home of John Clark, where he passed away.
Sheriff Roy Shaffer was called and he placed Smithberger under arrest. He was charged with driving while intoxicated and with reckless driving. The youth secured an attorney who obtained his release on a small bond Sunday afternoon, following his appearance in Mayor W. D. Radcliff’s court.
Smithberger was accompanied by three other persons. They were permitted to return to their homes with no charges being filed against them.
Miller, whose wife died some time ago, was living at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ira Clark, of East Union. He is survived by several children, most of whom live at distant points. He was well known throughout Noble County.

In 1930, Raymond Smithberger (28) and his wife A. Ulala (29) owned a farm in Stock Twp., Noble County, Ohio. Living with them were their two children, Frieda C. (1 yr 10 mos) and Laura E. (10 mos). Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Roman Dimmerling and Marion Pepper.

Earl Peter Smithberger

The following article appeared in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 5 Mar 1967:
MAN TREATED HERE AFTER BEING SHOT
Earl Smithberger, about 35, of Summerfield Route 1,
received treatment at Good Samaritan hospital last night
for what was reported to be a gunshot wound in his right
side.
It was first believed that Smithberger has been hit by a
single bullet but it was understood that treatment revealed
a number of pellets had lodged in his side.
The Monroe County sheriff’s office said it received a re-
port the shooting occurred in a tavern but the Noble County
sheriff’s office, which apparently has jurisdiction in the case,
said it had nothing to report.
Smithberger was brought here in a Brubach ambulance
from Summerfield. The attendant reported he picked up
the wounded man at his home after being called by the
father, Raymond Smithberger.
Smithberger was admitted to the hospital at 7:45 p.m.
and was still in surgery last night.

George Michael Burkhart

Commonly known as Michael Burkhart.

At the time of the 1870 census, farmer Michael Burkhart (39) and his wife Matilda (35) lived in Malaga Twp. with their children Barbary (13), Martin (12), Mary (10), George (8), Matilda (6), Michael (3), and Ann C. (1). The oldest four children attended school. The parents were natives of Bavaria; their children were all born in Ohio. The farm was valued at $2500, and their personal possessions were worth $900.

In 1880, Michael Burkhart (49) lived in Malaga Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with his wife Matilda (46). Both were born in Bavaria. Living with them were their children Martin (22), Mary (18), George (17), Matilda (16), Michael (14), Annie (10), and Rosa (3). George. Matilda, Michael and Annie attended school for 6 months during the previous year. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Peter Sharer and Joseph Burkhart. The relationship between Michael and Joseph is not known.

The 1900 census entry for the family is nearly illegible. (The left side of the page is very dark, making it nearly impossible to read the names.) It appears that Michael Burkhart (69, Feb 1831) and his wife Matilda (64, Jun 1835) lived with a 25 year old son born in Feb 1875 and a 22 year old daughter born in Apr 1878. Michael was a naturalized citizen,

Researchers Linda Anderson and Betty Hartley include two children in this family who do not appear in the 1880 census: Julia (1871) and Joseph (1875).

Matilda Zwick

According to the 1900 census, Matilda Zwick Burkhart gave birth to 10 children, 5 of whom were still living in Jun 1900. Four of the living children were Joseph (1875-1961), Julia (1871-1912), George (1862-1916) and Rosa (1878 - ?).

Mary Burkhart

According to her death record Mary Burkhart was 32 years of age and single.

Martin Zwick

In 1860, Martin Swick (22) lived on the farm of his parents in Franklin Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Martin's occupation was farm laborer.

In 1870, 33 year old Bavarian-born farmer Martin Swick lived in Franklin Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with his wife Margaret (28) and children John (8), Louisa (5) and Mary (3). None of the children attended school. Martin's farm was valued at $2400, and his personal property was worth $532. His farm was located in the census between those of his father and his brother George.

At the time of the 1880 census, Martin Zwick (43) and his wife Margaret (35) still lived in Franklin Twp. Living in the household were their children John (19), Louisa (15) and Annie M. (14). The girls attended school. Martin's parents and brothers George, Morris, and Joseph lived nearby.

Margaret Ann Hohman

Dolores Snider, in "St. Mary's -- 150 Years -- Fulda OH" states that Margaret Hohman was baptized in St. Mary's Church. However, the church did not exist prior to 1847. Prior to that, Fulda, OH was a mission of Temperanceville and later Miltonsburg, OH.

In 1850, 18 year old Margaret Hohman lived and worked on her parents farm in Enoch Twp., Noble County Ohio. She did not attend school duruing the previous year. According to the 1870 census, 28 year old Margaret could neither read nor write.

Annie Mary Zwick

According to researcher Linda Kay Anderson, Monroe County death records indicate that Annie Mary Zwick died a day after her birth in 1867. However, the 1870 census shows a three year old child named Mary Zwick, and the 1880 census has a 14 year old Annie M. living in the household of Martin Zwick.

Marx Zwick

Some researchers show Marx and Morris as two separate children of Michael Zwick. However, in the 1870 census, the man named Morris Swick has children identical to those of Marx Zwick. It is therefore assumed that these two men are one and the same.

MArx may have been named for his maternal grandfather.

Some researchers indicate that the first child of Marx and Mary Ann (Hohman) Zwick was a daughter named Frances (1864-1944) who married Henry Smithberger. Existence of this child is questionable. No record of her birth is found at St. Mary's in Fulda, Noble County, where the couple lived for the first five years of their marriage. Frances Zwick is not listed with her parents and siblings in the 1870 or 1880 census. She is also not listed as a surviving child in her father's death notice (1925). A surviving sibling named "Mrs. Frances Smithberger of Monroe county" is named in Martin Zwick's 1914 death notice, but this is believed to be a typographical error for what should be "Mrs. Francis Smithberger." (Anna Zwick married Francis Smithberger.)

In 1860, Morris Swick (19) lived on his parents' farm in Franklin Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. His occupation was carpenter.

In 1870, 30 year old Bavarian born farmer Morris Swick lived in Franklin Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with his wife Margaret (25) and children Barbara (4), Sebastian (3), George (2), and Martin (1 month). The family farm was valued at $2500, and personal property was worth $351. Morris' farm was located in the census between the households of his brothers George and Joseph.

At the time of the 1880 census, the family was still living in Franklin Twp. The household consisted of Marx (46) and Mary (36) and children Barbara (18), Sebastian (13), George (11), Martin (10), Joseph (8), Tildia (6), and John (3). Marx's brothers and parents lived nearby.

In 1900, Marx Zwick (62) lived with his second wife, Philomena (44) and children Anna C. (18), George P. Maloney (16 -- believed to be Philomena's son from her first marriage), Leander P. (9), Clemence C. (8), and Alexander (6).

Records conflict on year of birth:
1) Death record says she was 43 years of age 1 month 9 days. (Birthdate calculated from this date.)
2) According to Delores Snider (pg 100), church records indicate only year of birth -- 1843-- and that she was christened there.
3) Delores Snider (pg 255), gives 20 Apr 1844

Margaret Ann and Mary Ann Hohman (sisters) married brothers Martin and Marx Zwick.

Anna Barbara Zwick

Barbara Zwick was disabled. According to the 1880 census, she suffered from "paralysis." She was unmarried and living in Cincinnati at the time of her father's death in 1925.
