Selected Families and Individuals

Notes

George F. Burkhardt

Birthdate calculated from age at death in Monroe County death records: 68 yrs, 9 mos. Surname in death record spelled Burkhart.

In 1870, George F. Burkhart (40) owned a farm worth $2000 in Malaga Twp., Monroe Co., Ohio. His personal possessions were valued at $720. George lived with his wife Barbary (28) and daughters Barbary L. (5), Catherine J. (4), Philomena (3), and Theresa M. (1). Also living in the household was "hired hand" Jacob Weisent (25) -- Barbara's younger brother.. Neighboring households in the census were those of Michael Gladman and John A. Burkhart. George and John Burkhart were double first cousins... their mothers were sisters, and their fathers were brothers.

At the time of the 1880 census, Geo. F. Burkhart (40) lived in Malaga Twp.with his wife Barbara (38) and nine children: Barbara L. (15), Catherine J. (14), Philamina (13), Barbara T. (12), Catherine E. (10), Jacob S. (8), Berta (7), George A. (5), and Valenine F. (2). (The family seems to have had an affinity for the name Barbara.) The six oldest children attended school for six months during the previous year. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to William Ford and James Sloan.

In 1900, George F. Burkhardt (60) owned a mortgaged farm in Malaga Twp. where he lived with his wife of 36 years Barbara (58) and children Frank F. (19) and Mary J. (16). According to the census, George came to America in 1842 and was a naturalized citizen. He and Barbara spoke English, but could not read or write the language.

Barbara Weisend

By 1900, Barbara Burkhardt had given birth to 12 children, 9 of whom were still living at the time of the census.

In 1920, 77 year old widow Barbara Burkhart lived on a farm that she owned in Malaga Twp., Monroe Co., Ohio with her youngest daughter, Mary (35).

Researcher Betty Hartley believes this is the obituary of Barbara Weisend Burkhart. It is not known why she is referred to as "Marian."
MRS. MARIAN BURKHART The body of Mrs. Marian Burkhart who died near
Canton on Tuesday, was brought through to Miltonsburg in the Peoples Funeral Home
car on Wednesday. She was 89 years of, age and was born at Miltonsburg. Her maiden
name was Weisand and she was the widow of Mr. George Burkhart. She always lived in
that community until three years ago when she went to her daughters home in Canton,
where she died as the result of a stroke. She is survived by several children.
Funeral will be held Friday morning at St. John’s Roman Catholic church where she
was a member and services will be conducted by Rev. Father Heilman. Interment will be
made nearby.

Barbara Lucetta Burkhart

Sources conflict on Barbara Lucetta Burkhart. Researcher Linda Kay Anderson states that she died at birth, but does not cite a source. Barbara L. lived with her parents in 1870. The 1880 census shows her living with her parents and siblings. Barbara's twin, Lucetta B., lived with her grandparents.

One possible explanation is that Barbara and Lucetta were twins, and Lucetta was staying with relatives in 1870. Another possiblity is that there was only one child born in 1865. People frequently switched between their fist and middle names in the 19th and early 20th century. It may be that in 1880, the young woman, using the name Barbara L. was enumerated with her parents on one day, and a few days later, was enumerated again while visiting her grandparents.

Simon Jacob Burkhart

Monroe County death records contain an entry for an 18 year old man named Jacob S. Burkhart born c. 30 Sep 1871 (calculated from age at death), who died in Malaga Twp. on 31 May 1888. Although his parents names are not listed, it is believed that this is the son of George and Mary Weisend Burkhart.

There were only three young men born between 1870 and 1875 named Jacob Burkhart (Burkhardt, Burkhard) in Monroe County in the 1880 census.
1) Simon Jacob Burkhart, b. 24 Jun 1872, son of George and Barbara (Weisend) Burkhart. Believed to have died c. 1886, according to researcher Linda Kay Anderson. Lived in Malaga Twp. in 1880.
2) Jacob Burkhart, born 22 Jan 1872, son of Joseph and Catherine Burkhart, known to have died in 1947. Lived in Malaga Twp. in 1880.
3) Jacob Burkhart, b. 24 May 1873, son of Anthony/Andrew and Mary Hanna Kuhn. Known to have died in 1962. Lived in Seneca Twp. in 1880.

George A. Burkhart

George may have died between 1880 and 1900. He appears in the 1880 census with his parents and siblings. Census records state that Barbara Burkhardt gave birth to 12 children, 9 of whom were living in 1900.
