Selected Families and Individuals

Notes

William Smithberger

In 1860, 35 year old Prussian-born farmer William Smithberger lived in Elk Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 32 year old wife Theresa and six children: William G. (11), Anthony (8), Teresa (6), Justina (5), Thomas J. (3), and Isadora (1). The oldest four children attended school. Theresa was born in Baden. No place of birth is listed for the children, but the census-taker seemed not to note the place of birth if it was Ohio.

Also living in the house in 1860 was a 64 year old male, N. Fauth, born in Baden. This is probably Norbert Fauth, Theresa (Fauth) Smithberger's father.

Joseph Smithberger

Joseph Smithberger is not listed as one of the children of William Smithberger by Linda Joy Anderson (citing "A History of the Smithberger Family in America"). He is listed by Delores Snider (citing church records of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Fulda, Noble Co., OH).

In "St. Mary's -- 150 Years -- Fulda OH" Delores Snider lists 13 children in the family of William and Theresa Smithberger. Linda Kay Anderson's web page (http://www.gencircles.com/users/anderson51) lists 12. Joseph is the "exctra" child. The dates of birth for children #6 through #8 are "off" by one child as shown below:
Snider Anderson
#6 Joseph 21 Mar 1859 --
#7 Isadore 11 Dec 1860 21 Mar 1859
#8 Adaline 18 Sep 1862 11 Dec 1860
#9 Martha 18 Sep 1862 18 Sep 1862

Joseph is not listed with the family in the 1860 census. It may be that he died in infancy. Further research is necessary to determine the correct dates of birth for these children. (Noble Co. birth records, census records, death records, etc.) Perhaps the dates recorded by Ms. Snider are baptism dates, and the dates listed by Linda Anderson are birth dates.

Ferdinand Hohman

The 1850 census states that Ferdinand was born at sea, however the passenger list for the ship lists "Frederich"'s age as 1.

In 1860, 17 year old farmer Ferdinand Hohman lived with his parents and siblings on the family farm in Enoch Twp., Noble Co., Ohio. He attended school that year.

In 1870, Ferdinand Hohman (26) and his new wife Mary (21) lived and worked on his parents' farm in Enoch Twp.

At the time of the 1880 census, 37 year old Hessian born farmer Ferdinand Hohman lived in Enoch Twp., with his wife Mary (31) and children Matilda and John Morris (twins, 8), Catherine (6), Barbara (5), Enos (2) and Hannah (7 mos.) Also living with the family were Ferdinand's 75 year old widowed mother Catherine and his 12 year old nephew Ferdinand Stark (son of Mary Philomina Hohman and Charles Stark). Matilda, John Morris and Catherine Hohman attended school that year. The younger children and Ferdinand Hohman Jr. did not. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Peter Hill and widow Barbara Crock.

From the Fulda column of The Caldwell Citizens' Press, 29 May 1884:
Ferdinand Hahman lost a valuable cow last Friday.

Ferdinand Hohman moved his family to Harrietsville, Noble Co., OH around 1885, then to Allegheny Co., PA after 1900.

From the 1900 census:56 year old farmer Ferdinand Hohman rented a farm in Elk Twp., Noble County Ohio with four of his children. His daughter Hannah does housework, but the other children are at school. Although he is listed as "married" (not "widowed"), his wife is not listed in the household. Born in Germany, Ferdinand arrived in America in 1845 and became a narutalized citizen. Everyone in the home can read and write English.

Anna Maria Smithberger

The 1870 census states that Mary (Smithberger) Hohman could read but not write. Mary (Smithberger) Hohman does not appear in the 1900 census with her husband and children. Her husband, however, is listed as "married" (not "widowed").

John Hohman

Records confict on date of birth:
10 Nov 1879 Snider
Nov 1881 1900 census

The 1900 census lists John as being three years younger than his sister Hannah. Delores Snider has John one year older than Hannah. John is not included with the family in the 1880 census, which suggests that he was born after 1880. The latter birth date means that either John and Ferdinand were twins, or they were the same person (since Ferdinand is not included in any census with this family.)

Ferdinand Hohman

Eighteen year old Ferdinand Hohman is not listed with his father and siblings in the 1900 census.

Henry Hohman

At the time of the census in 1910 and 1920, Henry Hohman lived with the family of his sister, Matilda Hohman Kress, on Braddock Ave. in Braddock PA. Henry was employed as a teamster in a lumber yard in 1910 and as a teamster in the steel works in 1920.

Ottilia C. Schoeppner

Ottilia Schoeppner was not living with her father and stepmother at the time of the 1900 or 1910 census. "Kellye" Burkhart lived in Magnolia, Stark County, Ohio four months prior to her death.

Anthony William Smithberger

Living in the household in 1910 were 57 year old Anthony Smithberger, his 52 year old wife Mary, and six of their children: Adaline C (26), Benjamin F (22), Olive C (19), Anna E (16), Charlotte T (14), and Harro O (11). They resided in Noble Co., OH.

From death certificate:
Father: William Smithberger, Germany
Mother: Unknown
Spouse: Mary Anna Smithberger
Informant: H. O. Smithburger, Harriettsville

Benjamin Frederic Smithberger

On 5 Jul 1917, 27 year old farmer Benjamin Frederic Smithberger of Harriettsville, Ohio filled out a US draft registration card in Noble County, Ohio. He stated that he was born on April 28, 1888 in Mastertore (?), Ohio. Benjamin stated that he was "not in good health" but he was responsible for supporting his father and mother. He was described as being of medium height and slender build with gray eyes and brown hair. The registration card stated that he suffered from rheumatism.

From the Zanesville Times Recorder, 31 Dec 1937
Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Parks of Alliance attended the funeral
of her brother, Benjamin Smithberger at Lebanon, O.

Thomas John Smithberger

From the 1900 census: 42 year old farmer Thomas J. Smithberger lived on a farm that he owned in Elk Twp., Noble County Ohio with his 29 year old wife Catherine, four children -- Rupert (5), Eleanor (3), Justine (2) and Ester (2 months) -- Thomas' sister Martha (37), and his niece Louise (19). Louise was the daughter of Thomas' brother Anthony. Also living in there were two hired hands: Joseph Schafer (29) and William Burkhart (25).

In 1910, 52 year old Thomas J. Smith lived in Noble County, Ohio with his 39 year old wife Catherine and their seven children.

Catharina Ottilia Bishop

From the 1900 census: 29 year old Catherine Bishop Smithberger gave birth to four children, all of whom were still living.

Catherine Otillia Bishop Smithberger's obituary appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, OH) on February 25, 1949.

Isadore Francis Smithberger

In "St. Mary's -- 150 Years -- Fulda OH" Delores Snider lists 13 children in the family of William and Theresa Smithberger. Linda Kay Anderson's web page (http://www.gencircles.com/users/anderson51) lists 12. Joseph is the "extra" child.

Further research is necessary to determine the correct dates of birth for these children. (Noble Co. birth records, census records, death records, etc.) The 1900 census entry for Isadore Smithberger states that he was born in Mar 1859. This, combined with his presence in the 1860 census, suggests that Anderson's dates are correct.

In 1900, Isadore Smithberger (41) rented a home at 111 Fourth St. in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio. Living in the household were his wife, Thiresa (35), and children Agaithy (14), Raymond (13), Joseph (11), and Estella (7). All of the children attended school. Also living in the home was a 30 year old boarder named Ambrose Earley. Isadore was a self-employed carpenter. All members of the household were natives of Ohio. Isadore and Theresa's parents were born in Germany. The family surname was spelled "Smithburge" in the census index.

From Fox & Muth:
The families of Isadore Smithberger and Anton Muth were close friends. In Harriettsville, Noble Co., Ohio, the Smithbergers owned a store across the road from old St. Henry's Church, near the cemetery, which was donated to the church by the family.

The Smithbergers moved from Harriettsville to Marietta a year before the Muth family. The family home was inherited by Isadore's daughter Stella Smithberger, who had been engaged to Urban Muth before his untimely death in 1912.

Living in Marietta in 1938.

Isadore Smithberger’s obituary appeared in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 10 Jan 1940:
FORMER RESIDENT OF NOBLE COUNTY DIES IN MARIETTA

Noble county for 50 years, died at his home in Marietta
Monday morning at 9:30 following an illness.
Mr. Smithberger was a son of William and Theresa
Smithberger, early pioneers of Noble county, near
Harriettsville. He was born at Harriettsville and resided
there until the family moved to Marietta 30 years ago.
He was a member of the Brotherhood of Carpenters
and Joiners of America and the St. Mary's Catholic
church.
His wife, Mrs. Theresa Burkhart Smithberger, died
on January 1, 1939. Surviving are the sons and daugh-
ters, Joseph Smithberger of Tiffin; Ray Smithberger,
Omar Smithberger, Miss Stella Smithberger and Miss
Agnes Smithberger, all of the home.
The deceased was a member of a family of twelve
children, three of whom survive. They are Martha Morris,
of Caldwell; Edward Smithberger of Harriettsville who is
a patient in Thompson hospital, Caldwell; and Mrs.
Adeline Metz of Jamestown, North Dakota.
Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at
9 o’clock at St. Mary's Catholic church, Marietta, with
Rev. Fr. William Roben officiating. Interment will be
made in St. Mary’s cemetery.

Theresa Mary Burkhart

In the 1870 census, a five year old child named Theresa Burkhart lives in the household of Francis J. and Margaret Burkhart in Center Twp., Monroe County, OH. (pg 48, fam 344-339, lines 34-39) It is not known if this is the same person as Theresa M. Burkhart Smithberger.

The 1900 census states that Theresa Smithberger had given birth to four children, all of whom were living at the time of the census.

Estella Hildagard Smithberger

Nineteen year old Stella Smithberger was engaged to seventeen year old Urban M. Muth in 1912. During July of that year, Urban drowned in the Muskingum River. Stella and Urban's fathers walked the banks of the river for two days before they found Urban's body.

Stella Smithberger never married. She lived in the family home at 718 Sixth St., Marietta, Ohio. The Smithberger family remained close friends of the Muth family.
