Selected Families and Individuals

Notes

John Sebastian Hohman

John S. Hohman came to America aboard the brig Ulysses which sailed from Bremen and arrived in Baltimore on 06 Jul 1835. He movec to Enoch Township (then part of Monroe Co., Ohio) fron Wheeling in 1837. John Sebastian Hohman became a very prominet business man.

At the time of the 1850 census, 25 year old Sebastian Hammond lived in Enoch Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with his wife Matilda (24) and children John (4), Barbary (3), and Joseph (1). Adjacent farms in the census were those of Sebatian's parents and John Heil. Sebastian's brother-in-law, Ambrose Archer, lived with Sebastian's parents.

Before railroads were known, he drove large herds of stock over the Allegheny Mountains to Philadelphia and Baltimore, according to the Riley County (KS) Genealogical Society.

The first store in Fulda was started before the town was laid out, about 1855, by H. W. Heiddlesheimer and John Sebastian Hohman. The business was originally known as Heiddlesheimer & Hohman. After Heiddlesheimer left, the business was continued by John Sebastian Hohman alone. He dealt largely in tobacco and livestock. John S. Hohman was also the first postmaster in Fulda.

In 1860, 35 year old merchant Sebastian Hohman lived in Enoch Twp., Noble Co., Ohio with his 34 year old wife Matilda. Sebastian's assets (personal and real estate) totalled an astonishing $21,000 (at a time when it was not unusual for a family's assets to be under $500). Seven children lived in the home: John (14), Barbasry (13), Joseph (11), Eva (8), Henry (6), Rachel (4), and Mary A. (1).

During the Civil War, Sebastian Hohman's mercantile business amounted to $50,000 a year. According to "Pioneers of the Blue Stream Prairie" by the Riley County (KS) Genealogical Society, John Sebastian Hohman was a colonel in the Civil War. No other information supporting his Civil War service has yet been found.

By 1870, John S. Hohman's real estate was valued at $60,000 and his personal possessions were worth $20,000. Semastian's occupation was merchant and dry goods grocer. He was a US citizen, and lived in Enoch Twp. with his wife Matilda (42), and children John Jr. (24), Joseph (21), Eve (17), Henry (15), Rachel (13), Francis (8), Charles (6), Rosa (3), and Matilda (6 months). Only Rachel and Francis attended school. Also living in the household were domestic servant Emeline Archer (18), teamsters George (70) and Jacob (24) McMahon, tobacco worker Magnus Hohman (60), and store clerk Gustav Erlinman (22). Sebastian's daughter later married Gustav. The relationship between Sebastian Hohman and Hessian born Magnus Hohman is not known. Adjacent households in the census belonged to Robert Merand (?) and John Brahler.

As a result of poor speculation and mismanagement, Sebastian Hohman ran up debts of $146,000. Many people in the town suffered heavy losses when Sebastian's business failed. Following these financial difficulties, Sebastian moved his family to Clay County, Kansas in the mid 1870s. His store, dry goods and tobacco operations in Fulda was sold in 1876 to his son-in-law, Gustav Ehlerman. (Source: Schockling) He later moved to Riley County, Kansas.

In 1880, John S. Hohman (56) lived in Grant Twp., Riley County, Kansas with his wife Matilda (55) and children Francis (18), Charles (17), Rosana (13), and Mary M. (10). The youngest three children attended school.

He became a naturalized citizen in 1886.

Matilda Archer

The 1850 census entry for Matilda (Archer) Hamond states that she was born in Ohio and could not read or write. She was still unable to read or write in 1880.

The 1900 census entry for Matilda's daughter, M. Barbara Hohman Huffman, states that her mother was born in Ireland, as does the 1920 census entry for her son Joseph Hohman. While this is beleived to be incorrect, it suggests that her heritage may be at least partly Irish.

Anna Katharina Hohman

Anna Katherine Hohman is not listed in the 1850 census, suggesting that she was born after 1 Jun 1850.

Mary Anna Hohman

Mary Anna Hohman does not appear in the 1870 census with her parents and siblings. She would have been 11 years old. It is presumed that she died prior to 1870.

Charles Stark

In 1860, 29 year old clerk Charles Stark lived with 76 year old widow Margaret (Weber) Hohman. Charles later married Margaret's granddaughter, Mary Philomena Hohman.

In 1870, Charles Stork (40) lived in Enoch Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his wife Philomena (25) and children George (5), Katherine (3), and Ferdinand (1). Charles, who was a US citizen, was a merchant and dry goods grocer. He owned no real estate; but his personal possessions were valued at $1000. According to the census, Charles was born in Hanover. Adjacent households in the census belonged to George Bosold and August Dimmerling, Jr..

The family moved to Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., PA in 1872.

Mary Philomena Hohmann

According to the 1860 census, Mary Philomena Hohman was born in Hesse, however the 1870 census states that she was born "on the ocean." This conflicts with the 1850 census, which states that Philomena's older brother Ferdinand was born at sea in 1843.

Charles and Mary (Hohman) Stark moved their family to Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., PA in 1872. Their son Ferdinand (12) lived with Mary's brother Ferdiand Hohman in Noble County at the time of the 1880 census.

Bennett Nelson Ring

It is of note that Bennett N. Ring was born on his GGGrandfather's birthday, Edwin Bennett Root, father of Doris Root Schwallie, mother of Gordon R. Schwallie, father of Brenda Schwallie Ring, his mother.

John Morris Bosold

From the 1900 census: 40 year old farmer John Bosold lived on a rented farm in Elk Twp., Noble Co., OH with his wife Margaret C. and four children. John was born in Ohio to German-born parents. No occupation is listed for Margaret. Mary (15), the oldest child, is listed with an occupation of "housework." There is no indication that the other children attend school. (School age children in other families on the census page are listed as "at school.") However, John, Margaret, Mary, and Margaret A. (10) can all read and write English.

At the time of the 1910 census, 50 year old John M. Bosold lived with his 51 year old wife, Margaret C. Three of their children lived in the house: Margaret A. (20), George F. (17), and Minnie R. (13), along with John's sister Catherine (48) and an infant granddaughter Marie. According to Mark Fisher, the infant was the daughter of 20 year old Margaret A. Bosold.

In 1920, John M. Bosold (60) was still living in Elk Twp. on a farm that he owned with his wife Margaret C. (61), daughter Minnie Rosa Bosold (22) and granddaughter Marie Rosa (10). Minnie is listed as single, despite the fact that church reecords show that she married Earl Stevens in 1919. Maria Rosa is believed to be the child of John's older daughter, Margaret A. Bosold. Maria attended school during the previous year. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Mary Heissler and widow Josephine Springer.

At the time of the 1930 census, John M. Bosold (70) lived with his wife Margaret C. (71) on a farm they owned (value $200) in Elk Twp., Noble co., Ohio. Based on census data, they had been married for about 46 years. Living with them, as a lodger, was 64 year old, unmarried, farm laborer John Miller. John Miller may be the son of Joseph Henry Miller. One of Joseph Henry Miller's sons, George, and his family are listed immediately after John Bosold on the census. Also one of Joseph Henry Miller's grandson, Alex, and his family appear on the same census page. All members of the household were born in Ohio. John's and Margaret's parents were born in Germany. John Miller's fatner was born in Germany and his mother in the "United States." The household had a radio set.

The obituary of John M. Bosold was published in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 29 Sep 1930:
JOHN M. BOSOLD DIES AT HIS HOME NEAR HARRIETSVILLE
CALDWELL, O., Sept. 26 - John M. Bosold, 71, well known
farmer and lifelong resident of Elk township, near Harrietsville,
passed from life Friday evening at 5 o’clock, following an ex-
tended illness of complications.
Surviving are his widow and four children, George Bosold,
Caldwell; Mrs. Elizabeth Mantell and Mrs. Minnie Stevens, of
Harrietsville; and Mrs. Margaret Kress of Miltonsburg. One
brother, and one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Rorick, of Canton, also
survive.
Funeral services will be held at 9:30 o’clock Monday morning
from the St. Henry’s Catholic church at Harrietsville, of which he
was a devoted member, conducted by Rev. J. J. Donaldson.
Burial will be made in the church cemetery, nearby, with William
Estadt in charge.

From the Zanesville Times Recorder, 1 Oct 1930:
BERNE, O. -- Francis Crock and wife attended the funeral of
Henry Bosold at Harrietsville Monday.

On his death certificate, John Bosold's middle name is spelled "Maurice." The death certificate informant was George Bosold of Caldwell, Ohio (presumably John's son).

Margaret C. Saling

Among the children of John Saling (1829-1891) Delores Snider lists Margaret (dates unknown) and Caroline Margaret (1858-1950). She indicates that Caroline Margaret was married to both Andrew Miller and John Bosold. However, the dates of childrens' birth in both these marriages overlap, indicating that Andrew Miller and John Bosold were married to two different women.

Ms. Snider refers to John Bosold's wife as Margaret Saling, while the wife of Andrew Miller is called Carolina Margaret Saling. Both wives are listed with the same birth date (1858). The 1900 and 1910 census entries give Margaret Saling Bosold's middle initial as "C." It is my assumption that Caroline Margaret Saling was married to Andrew Miller, and her older sister Margaret was married to John Bosold. Margaret's great grandson Mark Fisher confirms that "John M. Bosold was definitely married to Margaret Saling Bosold."

To further complicate matters, Margaret C. Saling Bosold is listed in the 1910 census index as being 51 years old, and she is 61 in the 1920 census; which would put her birthdate at 1858 or 1859. Her birth date in the 1900 census looks like Oct 1854. In the 1860, census, there are only two girls in the Saling family: Mary (9), and Margaret (7).

From the 1900 census: Margaret Saling Bosold was born in Ohio to German-born parents. She had given birth to six children, four of whom are living. Margaret can read and write English.

According to great grandson Mark Fisher, Margaret Saling Bosold was referred to as "Little Grandma" because she was a tiny woman who couldn't have weighed 100 pounds She was often called upon as a midwife who would walk over hills and through woods with a dog hickory mast and lantern to aid the expected mother. She nursed several babies in the area to health when local doctors had given up on them. Margaret was gifted with a knowledge of plants and herbs, and knew how use them to heal.

Margaret Sailing Bosold's obituary appeared in The Zanesville Times Recorder on 30 May 1950:
MARGARET BOSOLD CALLED BY DEATH
Mrs. Margaret Sailing Bosold, 92, one of the oldest residents of Noble County,
died at the home of her son, George Bosold in the Florence addition in Caldwell,
Monday morning at 9 o'clock. following a short illness. Mrs. Bosold was born
near Fulda, the daughter of John and Margaret Sailing. She was the last survivor
of a family of 13 children.
She resided with her son since the death of her husband John 19 years ago.
Mrs. Bosold had been a life long member of the Catholic Church, first of St.
Henry's at Harriettsville, and later of St. Philomena in Caldwell. Mr. and Mrs.
Bosold had formerly lived in Harrietsville and helped financially to build St. Henry's
church there more than 50 years ago.
Surviving are a son, George, at whose home she died; three daughters, Mrs. Elizabeth
Mantell of Lower Salem Rt. 1, Mrs. Margaret Kress of Woodsfield, and Mrs. Minnie
Stephens of Harrietsville Route 1; 20 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren.
The body was taken to the William Estadt funeral home in Caldwell, where funeral
arrangements are incomplete.

She is buried in the Bosold family plot in Mount Olive Catholic Cemetery in Caldwell. Margaret is not buried with her husband John M Bosold at St. Henry's because she died, an error was made at St. Henry's, and there was no room in the plot. She was given a space in the plot her son George F. Bosold purchased at Mount Olive Cemetery in Caldwell. Timber was cut to help pay for the funeral expense.

Pheobe Jane Barnhart

The 1910 census states that Phoebe had given birth to four children, only one of whom (Ethel) was still living. Pheobe and her parents were all born in Ohio. The 1920 census, however, states that her father was born in Kentucky.

Andrew was employed as a watchman in a wire mill.

In 1930, widower Andrew Miller (75) rented a residence at 2330 Braddock Ave. in Swissvale, Allegheny County. The owner of the home was a 53 year old Swedish widow named Emily Wilson. Andrew lived with his unmarried daughter, Eleanor (27). Andrew was a pensioned policeman, and Eleanor worked as a cost clerk for an electirical manufacturing company.

Caroline Margaret Saling

Among the children of John Saling (1829-1891) Dolores Snider lists Margaret (dates unknown) and Caroline Margaret (1858-1950).

To further complicate matters, Margaret C. Saling Bosold is listed in the 1910 census index as being 51 years old, which would put her birthdate at 1858 or 1859. Her birth date in the 1900 census looks like Oct 1854. In the 1860, census, there are only two girls in the Saling family: Mary (9), and Margaret (7).

The 1900 census gives Caroline Saling Miller's date of birth as Aug 1856. The census states that all ten of her children were still living in 1900.

The 1910 census indicates that she'd given birth to 11 children, all of whom were living. She was 54 years old at the time of the 1910 census, which would put her year of birth at either 1855 or 1856.

Caroline's date of death (from Dolores Snider) is in question... the 1930 census lists her husband Andrew as a widower.

Charles John Mantel

The 1880 and 1900 census identify Charles Mantel (b. Jul 1879) as a grandson of Joseph Mantel. However, St. Mary's church records state that Charles Mantel (b. 6 Jul 1879) was the son of Joseph Mantel. Charley could concievably be the son of Joseph Martel Jr. and his wife Maria, both of whom died before 1900. However, Joseph Jr. would have been only 16 at the time of Charles' birth. Further research needs to be done to clarify the discrepancy.

In 1900, 20 year old printer Charles lived on the family farm with Joseph and Mary Martel.

At the time of the 1910 census, 30 year old farmer Charles J. Mantle lived with his wife of 3 years, Mary E. (25) and their sons, Clarance A. (3) and John A. On September 12, 1918, 38 year old self employed laborer Charles John Mantel (dob: July 6, 1880) of Harrietsville, Ohio registered for the military draft. According to his draft registration card his nearest relative was Elizabeth Mantel of Harrietsville, Ohio. His physical description is given as tall and slender with gray eyes and black hair.

John Alfred Mantel

According to the Ohio online death certificate index, Paul Mantel was married at the time of his death.

George Mantel

There is some confusion regarding the existance of George Mantel. Researcher Dolores Snider, citing church records, states that twin boys George and Paul Mantel were born on 11 Oct 1911. However, there is no mention of George in any other record. George Mantel is not included with the family in the 1920 census, nor is he listed as a survivng child in the 1965 death notice of his mother. In the 1930 census, his twin's name is given as "Paul G. Mantel."

It is possible that Paul and George might be the same person.

Margaret A. Bosold
