Selected Families and Individuals

John Schwallie

According to Roger Schockling, John Schwallie was a somewhat timid man. He did many things the hard way. He did not like to see hogs or cattle shot, even though he helped butcher the animals. John owned a car, but never drove it. It was his son Aloysius who drove the car.

John and Helena's home place was out on Rado Ridge, just before going down the hill to Middleburg. The Schwallie family moved to an 80 acre farm near Fulda in 1926.

From the 1900 census: 37 year old farmer John Schwallie lived on a farm that he owned in Jefferson Twp., Noble County, Ohio with his 34 year old wife Mary and their three young children: Annie (4), Roman (2), and Aloysius (3 months). John was born in Ohio to German-born parents.

Frank and Helena were very devout Catholics. In their last years, they both walked to church seven days a week. (source: Roger Schockling)

Anthony Burkhart

Records conflict on date and place of birth:
8 Feb 1831 (Anderson)
9 Feb 1831 -- Bruchweiler (Hartley)
16 Feb 1830 -- Renish, Barvaria, Germany (Nau, from obituary).

Anthony Burkhart came to America in 1851 (date conflicts with marriage data given by Wright, who says they were married in 1854 in France.)

By 1860, farmer Andrew Birkhert (22) had made his way to Seneca Twp., Monroe Co., OH where he lived with Hannah (23), John (3), Peter (1) and Mary (2 mos.) Kuhn. The children were natives of Ohio, and the adults were from Bavaria. Hannah's parents and siblings lived on the adjacent farm.

At the time of the 1870 census, Andy Burkhart (37) owned a farm worth $2000 in Seneca Twp. Other members of the household were Hannah (34), John (12), Peter (11), Mary (10), Andy (9), Barbary (7), Elias (6), Simon (5), Catherine (3), Joseph (1) and Hannah (3 mos.). The oldest three children attended school. According to the census, Hannah could read but not write. Hannah's parents, Peter and Catherne Kuhn were enumerated in the adjacent household in the census.

In 1880, farmer Andrew Burkhart (50) lived in Seneca Twp. with his wife Hannah (44) and children Peter (21), Andrew C. (19), Elias (15), Simon (14), Catherine (13), Joseph (11), Filomena (10), Nicolas (9), Jacob (7), George (5), and Adam (2). Elias, Simon, Catherine and Joseph attended school.

In 1900, Andy (69) and Hannah (64) Burkhart lived in Seneca Twp. with sons Joseph (32) and Adam (22). Although the census indicates that Andy and Hannah were born in Bavaria and France, respectively, the columns that should show immigra-tion information are blank. Adjacent farms in the census were those of John Nauer and Woodrow Okey.

In 1910, 79 year old Anton Burkhart owned a farm in Seneca Twp. where he lived with his wife Hannah (74) and their unmarried sons Joseph (42) and Adam (25). The year of Anton's immigration to America is not legible. It might be 1852. He was a naturalized citizen. Adjacent farms in the census belonged to Anton's son Nicolaus and his wife's nephew, Peter Kuhn.

At the time of the 1920 census, Anthony Burkhart (89) and his wife Hannah (83) lived on a farm run by their unmarried son Joseph (52). Also living in the home were two other unmarried sons, Andy (58) and Adam (42).
