John Thomas Burkhart

According to researcher Betty Hartley, John Thomas Burkhart served in the German Army and was honorably discharged in 1836.

In 1850, Thomas Burkhart (35) owned a farm worth $350 in Seneca Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Living with him were [his wife,] Mary (25), and children Magdelena (5), Sebastian (4), and John (2).

In 1860, farmer Thomas Burkhart (46) owned property worth $2000 in Summit Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Other members of the household were Mary (40), Magdelena (16), Sebastian (14), John (12), Michael (10), George (8), Mary A. (6), and J. Joseph (4). Thomas and Mary were born in Bavaria; the children were all born in Ohio. The family's personal possessions were valued at $830. According to the census, none of the children attended school. Adjacent families in the census were Frederick Kimelberger and John Zwick.

At the time of the 1870 census, 56 year old Thomas Burkhart's farm in Summit Twp. was valued at $6000. Also living in the household were Mary A. (45) and children Basil (23), Michael (19), George (18), Mary (15), and Joseph (10). Only Joseph attended school. According to the census, the children were born in Ohio; Thomas was from Bavaria, and Mary was a native of France. Mary could read, but could not write. Neighboring farms in the census belonged to Samuel Scott and Thomas's son, John.

Several discrepancies exist in the ages and birth order of Thomas Burkhart's children:
Birth dates supplied by researcher Betty Hartley have Sebastian older than Magdelena.
The 1850 and 1860 census show Magdelena older than Sebastian.
Magdalena is only eight and a half months older than John Burkart, according to Hartley.
