Joseph Henry Schweinberg

From "The Schweinberg Story":
Hard-working gentleman, skilled carpenter
Devoted Catholic, ardent devotion to St. Anthony.

In 1900, Joseph H. Schweinberg lived with his parents and siblings at 135 Camp Ave., Braddock, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. His employement was listed as Laborer Foreman.

At the time of the 1910 census, Joseph (32) and Rosa (28) rented a home at 739 Helena St. in Braddock. They lived there with their two sons, Joseph A. (2), and James R. (2 mos.) Joseph was employed as a carpenter.

In 1930, Joseph Schweinberg (51) owned a home worth $6000 at 147 Camp Ave. in Braddock. He lived there with his wife, Rose (48) and their children Joseph A. (20), Clarence V. (17), Kenneth Leo (14), Russell J. (12), Thelma G. (8), and Margaret E. (5). Kenneth, Russell and Thelma attended school. Joseph was employed as a painter for an electrical manufacturer.


Rose M. Davis

Rose converted to Catholicism. According to the 1910 census, Rose was born in Pennsylvania, her father was a native of Wales, and her mother was from England.


John Charles Schweinberg

Described in "The Schweinberg Story" as:
A gentleman, remarkable for his patientce, for love and care for his invalid wife.
He made no complaints. Contractor and carpenter.

In 1900, 18 year old John C. Schweinberg lived with his parents and siblings at 135 Camp Ave. in Braddock. He worked as a day lablorer.

In 1910, 29 year old John C. Schweinberg lived with his wife of 7 years, Elizabeth in Mifflin Twp (currently the Homestead/Munhall area), Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. Living with them were their children Catherine E. (5), Lucy E. (4), Raymond S. (2), and Mary E. (7 mos). Also living with them was boarder Robert Thompson (49). John was employed as a laborer on a "St. Car." All members of the household were born in Pennsylvania. According to the census, John's father was born in France and his mother in Pennsylvania; Elizabeth's father was born in Pennsylvania and her mother in Scotland. At the time of the survey, Elizabeth had given birth to 4 children all of whom were still living.

On 17 Sep 1918, 27 year old John Charles Schweinberg of 505 Amity in Homestead, Pennsylvania filled out a draft registration card. John's occupation is illegible on the card. The registration states that he was of medium height and slender build, with brown eyes and brown hair. Under the Physical Disabilities section, the word "Rupture" was written.

At the time of the 1920 census, the Schweinberg family owned a mortgaged home on Botsford St. in Mifflin Twp., Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The household consisted of John C. Schweinberg (38), his wife Elizabeth (33), and children Catherine (15), Lucy E. (14), Raymond S. (12), Mary C. (10), John C. (8), Paul (6) and Helen (4). Raymond, Mary, John and Paul attended school. Everyone in the household was a native of Pennsylvania. John's father and mother were born in France and Pennsylvania, respectively. Elizabeth's father and mother were from Pennsylvania and Scotland. John worked as a laborer on the electric railway.

In 1930, John C.Schweinberg (48) owned a home worth $13,000 on Botsford St. in Munhall, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Living in the household were his wife Elizabeth (44), and children Raymond (22), John C. Jr. (19), Paul (16), Helen (15), Dorothy A. (9), and Claire E. (4), as well as John's widowed daughter Mary E. Jones (20) and her son John R. (2). Only Helen and Dorothy attended school. John was a building carpenter, as were his sons Raymond and John Jr., while Paul was an apprentice electrical contractor. The Schweinberg family owned a radio set. No one in the family was a veteran of the armed forces. John's daughter, Catherine Schweinberg Furnival, lived next door.


Elizabeth McCready

Lizzie, who converted to Catholicism, was an invalid confined to a wheelchair in her later years. Her father and mother were born in Pennsylvania and Scotland, respectively.


Jerome Schweinberg

Jerome Schweinberg died at one month of age.


Alphonsus Mary Schweinberg

In 1900, Alphonsus Schweinberg lived with his parents and siblings at 135 Camp Ave. in Braddock, PA. He was employed in an electric works.

In 1910, 26 year old Alphonsus Schweinberg lived with his wife of 5 years, Anna (2) in a rented home at 224 Camp Ave. in Braddock, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. Living with them was their daughter Anna C. (3) and German born Mary A. Minzenberger (73) who is identified as Alphonsus' aunt. (Neither of Alphosus Schweinberg's parents had a sister named Mary, nor a sister who was married to anyone named Minzenberger. It's possible that this person may be an aunt of Anna Miller Schweinberg, about whom little is known.) Alphonsus worked as a painter for a railroad. Alphonsus, Anna and their daughter were born in Pennsylvania. According to the census, Alphonsus' and Anna's parents were all born in Germany but Alphonsus' parents and Anna's father spoke French whil Anna's mother spoke German. At the time of the census, Anna had given birth to 2 children 1 of whom was living.

Died unexpectedly at 41 years, survived by wife and nine children.

Tombstone is in the St. Joseph section of Braddock Catholic Cemetery, above road about 500' from wall near Bruggeman and Walter.


Anna M. Miller

In 1910, the census indicates that a 73 year old aunt named Mary A Minzenberger, born in Germany, was living with the family. Neither of Alphosus Schweinberg's parents had a sister named Mary, nor a sister who was married to anyone named Minzenberger. It's possible that this person may be an aunt of Anna Miller Schweinberg, about whom little is known.

In 1930, 46 year old widow Anna Schweinberg owned a home worth $2500 at 630 First St., Braddock, Allegheny County, Ohio. Living in the household were her eight children Anna C. (21), Aloyisius J. (19), Eva M. (17), Francis M. (15), Cyril J. (13), Bernard W. (13), Mary M. (9), and Loretta C. (6). The youngest five children attended school. Anna Miller Schweinberg did not work outside the home. According to the census, Anna's parents were born in Germany.


Elizabeth Suzanne Schweinberg

Elizabeth does not appear in the 1910 census.


Anna Catherine Schweinberg

Anna Schweinberg did not marry. In 1930, she lived with her mother and younger siblings in the family home on First St. in Braddock, Pennsylvania. Anna was employed as a clerk for an electric manufacturer.


Aloysius Joseph Schweinberg

In 1930, 19 year old Aloyisius Schweinberg lived with his widowed mother and siblings at the family home on First St. in Braddock, PA. He worked as a store room clerk at a steel mill.

Later, Aloysius was employed by the Braddock Borough Water Department. He never married.

Obituary:
Aloysius J. Schweinberg, 88, of Cowansville, died Wednesday, April
14, 1999. He is survived by two sisters. Friends were received Friday
at the Savolskis-Wasik-Glenn Funeral Home Inc., 3501 Main St.,
Munhall. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in
Good Shepherd Church.

James Sylvester Schweinberg

In 1910, 20 year old James Schweinberg lived with his parents and older brother in the fmaily home on Camp. Ave. in Braddock, PA. James worked in his father's grocery store.

Superintendent at West Penn Power Company.


Clare Griffin

Supervisor of music in Rankin public school system. First woman elected to the Braddock Board of Education. Organist at St. Peter Church in the college town of Slippery Rock, PA. Formed a chior made up of college students. Left Slippery Rock in 1966.
SS#: 178-34-1574 issued in PA in 1959 and 1961.


John Cyril Schweinberg

Known to the family as Jack.
Entered Passionist order... Rev. Cyril Schweinberg C.P.
Former director of "Crossroads" an international radio program. Later (c. 1982) assigned to provincial staff in South River NJ.


Joseph Peter Maurer

At the time of the 1930 census, Joseph Maurer lived with his parents and siblings in Braddock, PA. Joseph was a self-employed paper hanger. Later he worked as a construction engineer. Joseph was a veteran of the Signal Corp. in the US Army, European Theater.


Ann Gertrude Maurer

In 1930, Ann Maurer (age 19) lived with her parents and older siblings in Braddock. She was employed as a telephone operator. Later, Ann was a supervisor at A.T.& T.

McDOWELL, ANNA G. (MAURER) On Sunday, June 10, 2001, of Wilkinsburg, in New York, wife of the late Ralph H. McDowell; mother of the late Nancy Babyak & R. Thomas McDowell; grandmother of Thomas, Donald, David & Jack Babyak, Ann Miller, David, Jennifer & Amy McDowell; also survived by 18 great-grandchildren & three great-great grandchildren; sister of Sr. Mary Eugenia Maurer S.S.J. & the late Joseph, Charles & Loretta. Friends received 2-4 & 7-9 pm Tuesday only at the Thomas L. Nied Funeral Home, Inc. 7441 Washington St., Swissvale. Mass of Christian Burial in St. James Church on Wednesday at 10 am.
