John George Adam Burkhart

George Adam Burkhart came to America with his wife Barbara and his brother John. They left Harve France on the ship "Scotland" and arrived in Baltimore on 29 Jul 1840. They intended to reside in Pittsburgh, however Adam and Barbara must have moved to Ohio fairly quickly, since their first child was born there two months after their arrival in Baltimore.

In 1850, 37 year old farmer Adam Burkhart lived in Malaga Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with his wife Barbara (37) and children Mary Ann (10), John (7), George (3), and Trewitt (2). Adam and Barbara were born in Germany; the children were all born in Ohio. Mary Ann and John attended school. Also living in the house was 18 year old German-born laborer Phillip Hoffman.

At the time of the 1860 census, Adam Burkhart (47) and his wife Barbara (46) owned a farm worth $4000 in Malaga Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Children in the household were Mary (19), John (17), George (14), Catherine (12), Barbary (9), Adam (6) and Nicholas (4). All the children except Nicholas attended school. The family's personal possessions were valued at $250. Adam's brother John had the adjacent farm in the census.

According to researcher Charlie Burkhart, a newspaper abstract in one of the books that the Monroe Chapter, OGS mentions a daughter (no name), who was killed by a gas oil lamp when lighting it or filling it. The article was written in 1865, and Adam died in1863.

Gertrude Catherine Burkhart

Gertrude Burkhart does not appear in the 1850 census with her family. One explanation is that she died in infancy. Another possible explanation is that the census taker confused a variation of "Gertrude" with the name of the two year old boy "Trewitt" who was enumerated with the family.

Adam B. Burkhart

Records conflict on year of birth:
Oct 1854 -- Anderson

At the time of the 1900 census, 43 year old widower Adam Burkhart lived with his widowed sister, Mary Haren, and three of her adult unmarried sons on her farm in Malaga Twp., Monroe County, OH. His occupation was farm laborer.

In 1920, 66 year old widower named Adam A. Burkhart lived as a hired laborer in the household of widow Isabelle Baker (52) and her three teenage children in Malaga Twp., Monroe Co., OH. It is not known if this is the same Adam Burkhart.

Nicholas Burkhart

Nicholas Burkhart never married. He died in his early 30s of typhoid fever, a contagious disease that can be spread by consuming food that has been prepared by someone with the disease, or if the bacteria gets into drinking water. It was common in non-industrial America 100 years ago. Persons with typhoid fever usually have a sustained fever as high as 103° to 104° F. They may also feel weak, or have stomach pains, headache, or loss of appetite. In some cases, patients have a rash of flat, rose-colored spots.

In 1880, David (33) and Barbara (35) Burkhart lived in Sunsbury Twp., Monroe Co., Ohio with their children John (11), J. Mary (9), Peter (7), A. Allie (?) (5), Antony (3), Theodore (2) and Cilla (8 mos.). According to the census, the children did not attend school. Interestingly, the birthplaces of David and Barbara's parents is recorded as "Holland." Could the census taker have mis-interpreted "Deutchland" as "Dutch"?

By 1900, 48 year old David Burkhart (Dec 1861) lived with his wife of 32 years, Barbara (52 - Dec 1847) had moved to the Pittsburgh area, where they lived in a mortgaged home at 204 Corey Ave., Braddock, Allegheny Co., Pennsylvania. Living with them were their children Anthony (22 - Nov 1877), Philip (21 - Apr 1879), Celia (19 - Oct 1880), Catherine (18 - Mar 1882), Albert (16 - May 1884), Alloisus (13 - Nov 1886), and Laura (12 - Feb 1888). Allosius and Laura attended school. David and his older sons worked as day laborers, Celia and Catherine worked as laundresses. According to the census, all members of the family were born in Ohio as were David's parents and Barbara's father. Barbara's mother was born in France. According to the census, Barbara had given birth to 13 children, 11 of whom were still living. The date of birth for David Burkhart in the 1900 census (1861) differs greatly from other sources (1847).

Barbara Wahl

Sources conflict on date of birth:

In 1910, unmarried Anthony Burkhart lived with his widowed mother Barbara and two younger siblings on the family farm in Sunsbury Twp., Monroe County, Ohio.

An unmarried man named Anthony Burkhart died in of colon cancer Ozark, Monroe County on 11 Jul 1911. Although the man's father's name was David Burkhart, his mother -- Margaret Burkhart -- was the informant for the death certificate. Also, the year of birth (1871) of that man does not match the son of David and Barbara Burkhart (1876 or 1877).

In 1880, George Wall (40) and his wife Matilda (35) lived in Malaga Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with children John (15), Barbara (14), Frederick (12), Michael (10), Lucetta (8), William (6), Benjamin (64) and Joseph (1). The oldest five children attended school. According to the census, George's parents were born in France; Matilda did not know where her parents were born. (Census records in subsequent years have the couple's parents born in Germany).

At the time of the 1900 census, the family consisted of George W. Wahl (50), his wife Matilda (55) and unmarried children Barbara (33), George B. (24), Joseph (21), George Jr. (18) and Jacob (15). The two youngest boys attended school. The family lived in Malaga Twp.

In January 1910, George (70) and Matilda (65) Wahl lived in Malaga Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. According to the census, the couple owned their farm free and clear. However, they are included in the same household as another couple, George (54) and Elizabeth (53) Landenburg, who also owned the farm free and clear. The Wahls and the Landenburgs were all natives of Ohio with German-born parents. Both men are listed as "head-of-household." The Landenburgs had no children. Four of the Wahls' unmarried children lived with them: Barbara (44), Benjamin (34), George (27), and Jacob (25). Two of the Wahls' other sons -- Frederick and John -- lived nearby. (The Landenbergers lived two doors away ten years earlier in the 1900 census).

Ottilla Burkhart

Sources conflict on date of birth:
1843 -- 1850 census
Nov 1838 -- Reischman
Mar 1845 -- 1900 census
11 Feb 1845 -- death certificate

Sources also conflict on husband: Researcher Jim Reischman states that Ottilia/Matilda Burkhart married a man named Reischman. Researcher Betty Hartley says that she married John G. Wahl. This is confirmed by her death certiifcate, which states that Otillia Wahl, daughter of Frederick Burkhart and Othillia Burkhart was the widow of George Wahl.

According to the census, eight of Ottilla's ten children were still living in 1900. Those numbers was the same ten years later (i.e., none of her children died between 1900 and 1910).

In 1920, 74 year old widow Otillia Wahl owned a farm in Malaga Twp. where she lived with her unmarried children, Barbara (53), Benjamin (43), George C. (37), and Joseph (35). Ten years later, the family was comprised of the same five members, but Benjamin was listed as the head-of-household.

Barbara Wahl

Barbara Wahl never married.

Lucetta Wahl

According to the 1900 census, two of Ottilla Burkhart Wahl's children died prior to the 1900 census. One of those children is Peter William Wahl. Eight of the other children are accounted for after 1900. Therefore, Lucetta must have died prior to 1900.

George Benjamin Wahl

In the 1930 census, unmarried Benjamin Wahl (53) was listed as the head of household on a farm in Malaga Twp. He lived with his widowed mother, Ottilla (85), and his unmarried siblings Barbara (64), George C. (48), and Jacob M. (46.).

Joseph F. Wahl

Dte of birth cited by Hartley (29 Nov 1876) may be in error, since it is less than nine months from the next older sibling. According to the 1900 census, Joseph was born in Nov 1878.
