Also living in the household was a 17 year old servant, Annie Farley. According to the census, the Burkharts had one other child who died prior to 1900. Nicholas and Ernest were employed as laborers. Nicholas and Kate's parents were born in Germany.

At the time of the 1910 census, Nicholas D. Burkhart (56) and his wife Kate (55) lived at 903 Washington St. in Marietta with their daughters Helen (22) and Agnes (16). Nicholas was employed as a real estate agent.

The 1900 census entry for Theodore's son Anthony Brinkmeier states that his parents were born in Germany. Hoever, his son, Frank's entry states that Theodore was born in West Virginia.

Anthony Brinkmeier

In 1900, 26 year old farmer Anthony Brinkmeier lived on a farm that he owned in Stock Twp. Noble County Ohio with his 23 year old wife Katie. Anthony was born in West Virginia to German-born parents.

Anna Miller

The following notes appeared in the Fulda column of the Caldwell Citizens' Press, on 7 Jun 1883:
Birth -- To Philip and Matilda Miller, a daughter, May 31st.

This conflicts with information in the online Ohio death certificate index, which gives the date of birth as 29 May 1883.

In 1930, 46 year old widow Anna Tornes owned a farm in Watertown, Washington County, Ohio, where she lived with her children Walter (23), Norbert (19) and Veronica (13). Veronica attended school. The adjacent farm was owned by Anna's sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and John Tornes.

Mildred I. Tornes

Mildred did not appear in any census with the Tornes family. She may have died as a young child.

Gotlieb Heil

The 1860 census shows a 25 year old German-born butcher named Gotleib Hile living in Wheeling Creek Valley, Ohio County, Virginia. Other members of the household were Katherine Hile (45) and Lawrence Hile (10). The 1860 census does not indicate the relationship between household members. It is possible, but not proven, that Lawrence was Gotleib's younger brother and Katherine was their widowed mother.

Family lore has it that Catherine Michel eloped with Gottlieb Heil. There seems to have been little communication with the Michel family following their marriage, possibly because Gottlieb was not Catholic. (source: Dzurec).

The November 1862 US IRS Tax Assessment List for West Virginia shows a Gottleib Heil of Ohio County West Virginia was assessed taxes in the amount of $3.35 for 3 calves and 32 hogs slain for sale.

At the time of the 1870 census, the Heil family lived in Pease Twp., Belmont County, Ohio. The household consisted of Gotleib (36), Catherine (30), John (8), Mary (6), Emma (4), William (2) and Sophia (6 mos). According to the census, Gotleib and Catherine were natives of Hesse-Darmstadt, and the children were all born in Ohio. Gotleib Heil's property was worth $1800 and his personal possessions were valued at $400. Gotleib worked as a butcher. He was a US citizen.

In 1880, Godleib Heil (44) and his wife Catherine (38) lived in Pease Twp., Belmont County, Ohio with their children John (18), Mary (16), William (12), Annie (10), Joseph (7), Louis (4), and George (1). Godleb was a native of Germany. His wife and oldest son were born in West Virginia. The remaining children were all born in Ohio. Godlieb and John worked as butchers. William, Annie, and Joseph attended school.

The living members of the family moved to Denver, Colorado, in 1896. Where the daughters were living and who they married is still unknown.(November 21, 2008, Dzurec).

Gottlieb Heil was found in the Ballegner and Richards Denver City Directories, in 1896, 1897, and 1899.
1896 -- butcher, r Denver Union Stock Yards
1897 -- butcher, r Denver Union Stock Yards
1899 -- huckster, r 19 Starr, Elyria

By the time of the 1900 census, the family owned a home at 22 Powell St. in Elyria, Arapahoe County, Colorado. The household consisted of Goodelf Heil (62), his wife of 39 years, Cather (58), and children Louis (22), George (20), Charlie (1882) and Andy (1884). According to the census Goodeif was a native of Germany, his wife was from Illinois and the children were all born in Ohio. Cather's father and mother were from Virginia. The census states that Cather had given birth to six children four of whom were still living. Everyone in the household worked as a butcher. The census states that Goodelf arrived in the US in 1889. This is unlikely, given the ages of his children and the length of his marriage. (There are many discrepancies in this census record that warrant further research.)

Catharina Michel

In 1910, widow Catherine Heil (67) owned a home at 4638 Humboldt in Denver, CO. Living with her were her unmarried son John (45), a butcher, widowed son Joseph (35) and her granddaughter, Catherine M. (7). According to the census, Catherine was born in West Virginia to German parents. She had given birth to 10 children, 8 of whom were still alive in 1910.

Sophia Annie Heil

The 1870 census states that 6 month old Sophia was born in December of the previous year. The 10 year old daughter of Gottleib Heil is named Annie in the 1880 census.

Annie Heil

This child was not included in any census with the Heil family.
