Simon Burkhart

In 1880, 15 year old Simon Burkhart lived and worked in Elk Twp., Noble Co., Ohio on the farm of his uncle, John A. Burkhart. He attended school that year.


William Ernest Kress

In 1920, William E. Kress (43) and his wife Glenna P. (22) lived on Camden Ave. in the Tygart District of Parkersburg in Wood County, West Virginia. Also living with them were their children Waldo (1 yr 11 mos) and Seva I. (2 mos). William was a native of Ohio; his wife and children were born in West Virginia, as were Glenna's parents. William's occupation was "role and hammer" at a shovel plant.

At the time of the 1930 census, widower William P. Kress lived on Bond St. in Parkersburg with his children Waldo (12), Slyvia (10), and Okey (7). William was employed as a laborer, but the industry in which he worked is illegible in the census. William owned the $2500 house in which he lived. Two young couples rented rooms in the dwelling.


Seva Ireta Kress

Seva Ireta Kress, 87, of Parkersburg died Sept. 23, 2007, at St. Joseph's Hospital. She was born Oct. 2, 1919, in Parkersburg, a daughter of the late William Ernest and Glenna Pearl Stanley Kress. She was a member of the Church of Christ and attended the Camden Avenue Church of Christ in recent years. She worked at many jobs over the years, the American Viscose, O'Ames, Greiners Bakery, several restaurants and The Guard Cleaners. She lived all her life in Parkersburg and loved keeping birds and caring for them. She is survived by one brother, Okey Kress and his wife, Pearl, of Parkersburg; three nephews, Ronald Kress and his wife, Jo, of Vienna, Mike Kress and his wife, Sally, of Washington and Keith Kress and his wife, Linda, of Parkersburg; and two nieces, Linda Kress Berry and her husband, Andy, and Bonnie Kress, both of Tennessee. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Waldo Kress. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg with Evangelist Dana Slingluff officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen South Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until service time at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.


John Walter Kress

In 1920, John W. Kress (40) and his wife Carrie B. (31) lived on Elizabeth Pike in theTygart District in Wood County, West Virginia. John worked the hot press at a porcelain plant.

At the time of the 1930 census, John W. (50) and Carrie B. (41) Kress owned a home worth $5000 on Central Ave. in the Tygart District in Wood County, West Virginia. There were no children in the home. John's occupation is illegible.


Edward Eugene Witzberger

In 1910, Edward Witzberger lived with his parents and siblings at the family home at 1712 Wetzel St. in Wheeling, West Virginia. He attended school and also worked as a stripper in a stogie (cigar) factory.

At the time of the 1920 census, Edward Witzberger (24) and his wife Isabella (21) rented a home at 1815 Wood Ave. in the 4th ward of Wheeling, WV. Living with them were their daughter Evelyn (1 yr 10 mos) and niece Elizabeth Wahl (17). Elizabeth, a native of Pennsylvania, attended school. Elizabeth's father and mother were born in Ohio and Pennsylvania, respectively. Isabelle's parents were German. The census states that Edward's parents were born in the United States. Edward worked as a painter.

Living near the Witzberger family in 1920 were seveal other families with ties to Monroe and Noble Counties in Ohio. Edward's uncle, John Wertzberger, lived at 1705 Wood Ave. The familyof Margaret Cornett owned the home at 1719 Wood Ave. The relationship (if any) between these Cornetts and Isabelle Singer Wertzberger's mother (Margaret Cornett Singer) is not known at this time.

In 1930, Edward (33) and Isabel (32) Witzberger owned a home worth $5000 on Stone Church Rd. in Triadelphia, Ohio County, West Virginia. They lived their with their five children, Evyline (12), Margrette (9), Alberta (7), Mary B. (2 yrs 10 mos), and Edward (7 mos). The three oldest children attended school. Edward was employed as a house painter. The family owned a radio set.
