James Jacob Butler Jr.

In 1900, James Butler (33 - Jan 1867) lived alone on a farm that he owned in Boston Twp., Belmont County, Ohio. Several of his siblings lived nearby.

In 1920, James Butler (52) and his wife Rosa (53) rented a farm in Somerset Twp., Belmont County, Ohio. Living with them was James' 80 year old widowed mother, Mary A. Butler. According to the census, everyone was a native of Ohio. James and Rosa's fathers were from Ireland.

James and Rosa Butler had no children. Death certificate informant was his sister Margaret Butler Vogt.


Rose Slaven

According to her death certificate, the cause of Rose's death was septicemia from an impacted hand. A contributory cause of death was hemorrhage from a ruptured radial artery. Although there is a section of the death certificate that asks the physician to describe the nature of the accident or injury, that portion was left blank.

Rose Butler’s obituary appeared in the Zanesville Signal on 17 Aug 1934:
BURIAL FRIDAY
BARNESVILLE - Funeral services for Mrs. Rosa Butler,
70, were held in the Temperanceville Catholic church Friday
morning at 10 with Rev. A. C. Barr in charge. Burial was
made in Beaver cemetery.
Mrs. Butler, wife of James Butler, of near Temperance-
ville, died in the General hospital here Wednesday. She
had been suffereing with an infected hand for some time
and had been a patient at the hospital for two weeks.
Besides her husband, she leaves two brothers, Michael
and Nicholas Slevin of Akron, and three sisters, Tessie of
Galveston and Mary and Anna Slevin of the Temperance-
ville region.

Rose's father's surname is clearly spelled "Slavin" on her death certificate. The surname is spleed Slevin in her obituary, and on the death certificate of her husband, James Butler. James was the informant for Rose's death certificate.


George Washington Butler

In 1920, George (35 - Sep 1864)) and Jenna (32 - Oct 1867) Butler lived on a farm in Boston Twp., Belmont County, Ohio with their children Marry E. (9 - May 1891), Lena (6, Nov 1894), Charles H. (3 - Feb 1897) and Clara A. (2 mos - Mar 1900). Mary and Lena attended school. All members of the household were natives of Ohio except Jennie, who was born in "Virginia (West)."

In 1910, George Butler (45) and his wife of 20 years, Jennie (43), owned a farm in Somerset Twp., Belmont Co., Ohio where they lived with their children Many Ann (18), Lena (15), Charles H. (15), Clara A. (10), and Bernard (3). Charles and Clara attended school. According to the census, Jennie had given birth to five children, all of whom were still alive in 1910. Birthplaces match those given in the 1920 census. The family of William Poulton, whose son, Paul, would later marry Clara Butler, lived a few doors away in the census.

One child's name in the 1910 census does not match that given by researcher Roger Shockling for this family, unless the child named Mary Ann in the census was also known as Emma.

At the time of the 1920 census, George Butler (55) and his wife Jennie (52) owned a farm in Somerset Twp.. Living with them were their children Clara (19) and Bernard (12). Bernard attended school. George and the children were born in Ohio; Jennie was from West Virginia. Jennie's parents were German. George's father and mother were from Ireland and Ohio, respectively. Living next door were the familes of Symon Butler (59) and John Vogt (55). The relationships between the families are not known at this time.

According to the 1900 census, Jennie had given birth to four children, all of whom were living in 1900.


Simon Peter Butler

In 1900, Simon P. Butler (40 - Mar 1860) and his wife Emma (33 - Sep 1866) owned a farm in Boston Twp., Belmont Co., Ohio. The couple had been married for 6 years and had two children: Florence T. (5 - Oct 1894) and Mary E. (8 mos - Sep 1899). Also living in the house was a niece, Mary J. Burkhart (14 - Feb 1886), who attended school. Everyone in the household was a native of Ohio except Mary Burkhart, who was born in West Virginia. Emma's father and mother were from Maryland and Ohio, respectively.

At the time of the 1910 census, Simon P. Butler (50) and his wife Emma (43) owned a farm in Somerset Twp., Belmont Co., OH where they lived with their four children, Florence T. (15), Mary E. (10), Joseph (5) and Zeida (11 mos.). All the children attended school except the baby.

In 1920, the Butlers still owned a farm in Somerset Twp. The household consisted of Symon (59), his wife Emma (53), their unmarried children Joseph F. (15) and Zita E. (10), married daughter Lizzie M. Gallagher (20) and her husband Forest R. Gallagher (20). Joseph and Zita attended school. Symon's brother George lived in the next household in the census.

According to the 1920 census, Emma's father and mother were natives of Maryland and Ohio, respectively.


John A. Vogt

In 1900, John A. (36 - Apr 1864) and Margaret (27 - Jun 1872) Vogt owned a mortgaged farm in Boston Twp., Belmont County, Ohio. Living with them were their three children, Annie M. (6 - Feb 1894), Lawrence E. (3 - Mar 1896) and Marry G. (10 mos. - Jul 1899). Only Annie attended school. John and the two oldest children were born in "Virginia (West)." Margaret and Mary were natives of Ohio. John's parents were German. Margaret's father and mother were from Ireland and Ohio, respectively.

According to the 1900 census, Margaret had given birth to three children, all of whom were living in 1900.

Allen Price

In 1900, Allen Price (25 - Jul 1874) and his wife Trissie (24 - Dec 1875) owned a farm in Boston Twp., Belmont Co., OH. They had been married for 4 years and had three children: Vasty E. (3 - Dec 1896), Dessie S. (1 - Sep 1898) and Vietta G. (3 mos - Mar 1900). The two oldest children were born in Virginia; everyone else in the home was a native of Ohio. Allen's parents were also from Ohio.

By the time of the 1920 census, the family had moved to Somerset Twp., Belmont County, Ohio. The household consisted of Allen Price (46), his wife Trissie J. (45), and children Etta G. (17), Henry M. (15), Flossie M. (13), Vasil G. (4 yrs 2 mos), Fera L. (1 yr 9 mos), and Vera L. (1 yr 9 mos). Only Henry and Flossie attended school. According to the census, everyone in the home was born in Ohio, as were Allen and Trissie's fathers. Their mothers were from Maryland and England, respectively.

In 1930, the family still lived on a farm valued at $1800 in Somerset Twp. The members of the household were Allen Price (56), wife Tressie (55), and children Vasile (15), Vera L. (12) and Fera L. (12). All three children attended school. The census stated that everyone was a native of Ohio, as were their parents, with the exception of Allen's mother, who was from Maryland.

Two of Allen Price's daughter's death certificates list their father's place of birth as West Virginia. Allen Price himself was the informant for one of those death certificates (Victoria's). The other (for Flossie) lists Reader [Wetzel Co.], WV as Allen's place of birth.
