John Burkhard

In 1880, 24 year old unmarried John Burkhard lived on his parents farm in Sunsbury Twp., Monroe County, Ohio with eight younger siblings. He was employed as a railroad worker.

Dates of death and birth are not proven. According to researcher Mark Haren, John Burkhard was born in 1856 and died in 1892. (No sources are cited for this informaiton.) John's wife, Josephine Haren Burkhart, is known to be a widow in 1900. Monroe County death records contain an entry for a John Burkhart who died in Sunsbury Twp. 18 Oct 1892. (Vol. II, pg 7, row 11) This researcher [Lynn Coburger] has not seen these records first hand -- only a typewritten extraction from Charlie Burkhart in 2004. The date of birth in the death records (18 Feb 1866) does not match John Burkhard's census records (c. 1856). The age at death in the county records is 26 yrs, 8 months. Is it possible that this number was mis-read when the records were extracted? Further research must be done to clarify the matter.

Josephine Haren

Researcher Mark Haren states that the second husband of Josephine Haren (1865 - 1939) was a man named Burkhard. Together, they had three children, William (1921), Virginia (1922), and John (1926). This seems unlikely, since Josephine would have been 61 when John was born.

In addition, a similar family has been found in the 1930 census: A. J. Burkhard, his wife, Catherine, and children William (1921), Virginia (1922) and John (1926). According to the 1930 census, Catherine's parents were born in the Irish Free State.

In 1900, widow Josephine Burkhart (30) rented a house in Sunsbury Twp., Monroe County, Ohio where she lived with her only child, Sylvester (9). Josephine worked a s a dress maker. Sylvester attended school.

In 1930, a 64 year old widow named Josephine Burkhard owned a home worth $450 in Sunsbury Twp. She was not employed at the time of the census. Adjacent households in the census were those of widow Isabel Morrow (75) and Charles Yerian.
