Gilbert T. Haren

Employed by Goodyear Aerospace, Akron, Ohio.

Obituary from The Canton Repository, 5 Dec 2004:
Gilbert T. Haren, born December 27, 1927, to the late
Urban and Elizabeth Haren, passed away at his home at the age
of 76, on Friday, December 3, 2004. He was born in Akron and
returned to his roots two years ago after residing in Malvern for
24 years. He graduated from both Hower Vocational High School
and West High School before serving in the U.S. Army during World
War II. Like many young men in the Akron area, Gil sought employ-
ment with a rubber company, first The Goodyear Tire and Rubber
Co., followed by Goodyear Aerospace. He retired from the Wheel
and Brake Test Lab as Manager in 1982 with 36 years service. Gil's
retirement meant more time to spend with Dottie, his loving wife of
55 years.
After raising six children, Lyn, Tom, Debby, Rick, Mary
and David, and being involved with all their activities, it was now
time to pursue his interests. Never one to sit idle, his days now con-
sisted of spending time with friends at the bowling alley and golf
course, bicycling, working on the yard and house, and traveling all
over the U.S. in their 10 foot pop-up camper. While living at Lake
Mohawk in Malvern, Gil was instrumental in designing and main-
taining the “walking path” and served on several committees. When-
ever someone needed help, he always volunteered, whether asked or
not. The past two years, even while contending with his own cancer,
he volunteered at both Camp Quality and C.H.O.P.S., camps attended
by children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
Since moving back to Akron, Gil currently participated as an
active member of the Resident’s Club at Chapel Hill Towers. Although
his illness may have slowed him down, all that met Gil were amazed at
his strong spirit. His cancer didn’t control his life. He always had a
sparkle in his eyes and a smile for all those he met.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his grand-
daughter, Melissa Semonin; brothers and sister-in-law, Robert and
Kenneth (Gladys) Haren; in-laws, Ray (Theresa) Leighton; and brother-
in-law, Ray Leighton. Dottie, his wife since January 29, 1949, survives
him as well as his six children, Lyn (Mark) Semonin, Tom Haren,
Debby (Gene) Davidson, Rick (Estela) Haren, Mary (Joseph) Kline
and David (Margo) Haren; and 11 grandchildren; and 10 great grand-
children. He is also survived by his sister, Edna (Kenny) Smith; sister-
in-law, Marilyn Haren; brother-in-law, Ted (Dot Lee) Leighton; and
numerous nieces and nephews.

Dorothy E. Leighton

Obituary from The Canton Repository, and The Akron Beacon Journal, May 19, 2008
Dorothy (Dottie) L. Haren Dorothy L. Haren, born August 23, 1921, to the late Raymond and Elizabeth Leighton, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 86 on May 17, 2008. Her faith in God, along with daily bible reading provided her comfort.
She was born in Akron and returned to her native town after residing in Malvern for 24 years. In 1938 she graduated with honors from East High School in a split class due to World War II. Dottie sought employment with the government's Job Corp in the park system after graduating, then as a secretary for Norman, Malone, and Associates Advertising. She retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in 1986 as a trademark administrator.
Dottie and Gill embraced a marriage of 55 years. They raised six children; Lyn, Tom, Debby, Rick, Mary and David. Family was of the utmost importance to Dottie; she was the heart of it. There never seemed to be enough family time for her, but she brought everyone together whenever possible. Family adventures included packing her family of eight into the station wagon where they traveled to numerous camp grounds to enjoy hiking, swimming, and scavenger hunts.
Dottie had the personality that attracted many friends. Her kind words and compassion were always in abundance. She enjoyed a night out with the girls bowling, feasting at the Waterloo Restaurant, and entertaining the crowds with karaoke. Any time music was heard, Dottie would sing to the tune. Dancing was a favorite pastime - even belly dancing!
Dottie had a passion for gardening, where she spent many hours planting and weeding as a member of the Lake Mohawk Civic Club. While living at the lake, she and her husband created a walking path so everyone could enjoy nature's beauty. Dottie's beautiful love encompassed everyone she met. She will always be remembered as a peacemaker with unconditional love.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert T. Haren; son, Thomas M. Haren; granddaughter, Melissa Semonin; brothers and sister-in-law, Ray (Theresa) Leighton, and Ted Leighton; nephew, Teddy Leighton; in-laws, Urban (Elizabeth) Haren; brothers- in-law and sisters-in-law, Robert (Marilyn) Haren, and Kenneth (Gladys) Haren.
She is survived by five children, Lyn (Mark) Semonin, Debby (Gene) Davidson, Rick Haren, Mary (Joseph) Kline, David (Margo) Haren; 11 grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Kenny (Edna) Smith and Dot Lee Leighton; numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, May 22nd., at Chapel Hill Church, 1160 Howe Avenue, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio 44221, with Pastor Kurt Huber officiating. Burial at St. Joseph Cemetery in Randolph. Friends will be received at the Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Road, Akron, 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday.
