George Schumacher

In 1870, 32 year old farmer George Schumacher owned a farm worth $2000 in Woodsfield, Center Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. Other members of the household were Mary Schumacher (26), Matilda (2) and Philomena (1), and a 10 year old domestic servant named Martha Ryan, who attended school. The relationship (if any) between Martha and the Schumachers is not known. Everyone in the home was a native of Ohio except George, who was Bavarian born American citizen. George's brother Joseph lived next door.

At the time of the 1880 census, George Schumacher (42) still lived on a farm in Center Twp., with his wife Mary (36) and children Matilda (14), Philomena (11), Elizabeth (9), Sarah (5), George Jr. (4), and Katie (1).

In 1900, George Schumacher (62) still lived in Center Twp. with his wife Mary (55) and children George (24), Catherine (22), Barbary (18) and John (14). According to the census, George came to America in 1883. This conflicts with other evidence, particularly, the 1880 census in which the same family appears. The census also states that Mary Schumacher gave birth to nine children, one of whom died prior to 1900.
