Carl W. Gerst Sr.

At the time of the 1930 census, Carl Gerst lived with his widowed mother and siblings in Youngstown, Ohio. Carl attended school, and was also employed as a bricklayer in the housing industry.


Harold Edward Schuneman

On 12 Sep 1918, 19 year old Harold Edward Schuneman of 88 Watson Blvd., Pittsburgh filled out a US military draft registration card. He gave his birth date as OCt. 29, 1898. He was employed as a clerk (name of employer was illegible). His nearest relative was Mrs. Anna M. Schuneman of the same address. Harold was described as being of medium height and build, with blue eyes and light hair.

In 1930, Harold E. Schuneman (31) owned a home worth $10,000 in Shaler Twp., Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Living with him were his wife Mary L. (22) and son Harold E. Jr. (1). Everyone in the household was born in Pennsylvania. According to the census, Harold's parents were German, and Mary's father and mother were natives of Pennsylvania and Ohio, respectively. Harold worked as an office clerk for the steam railroad.


Lois Mary Aldenhoven

Name looks like it might be "Doris M." in the 1910 census, but it's very clearly "Lois" in the 1920 census. Lois Aldenhoven did not live with her father and older sister at the time of the 1930 census. G. Spies has the name as "Doris."

Lois M. Aldenhoven appears twice in the 1910 census... once with an unmarried 42 year old aunt named Anna C. Nickles at 440 W. Roy Street in New Philadelphia, Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Anna and Lois are the only two residents in the household. Lois appears in the census again two days later with her father and sister in Pittsburgh.


Robert F. Strickler

LOCAL IRS AGENT HONORED
Robert F. Strickler, employed by the Zanesville office
of the Internal Revenue Service, was recently presented with a
Special Achievement Award in recognition of his superior work
performance.
Strickler, who resides at 30 Southard avenue, is an Inter-
nal Revenue Agent in the Audit Division of Internal Revenue in
Zanesville.
Presentation of the award was made by Paul A. Schuster,
District Director of Internal Revenue for Southern Ohio. In making
the presentation, Schuster complimented Strickler for his high quality
performance and congratulated him for being one of the relatively few
employees selected for such an award.


Eileen E. Gerst

On 24 Jan 1945, The Zanesville Signal reported:
Miss Bonita Noll, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.N. Noll of 824
Prospect Avenue and Miss Eileen Gerst, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
E.W. Gerst of 1137 Lafayette street spent the week-end in Baltimore
Md. Both girls are employed in the FBI office at Washington.

The following articles appeared in The Zanesville Signal, May 16, 1945 and May 21, 1945:
Miss Eileen Gerst of Washington and Miss Agnes Gerst of
Columbus arrived for a few days visit with their parents Mr. and
Mrs. E. S. Gerst of 1137 Lafayette street.
Miss Agnes Gerst of Columbus and her sister, Miss Eileen
Gerst of Washington will return this week after spending several
days visiting their parents Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Gerst of 1137 Lafay-
ette street.

The following articles appeared in The Zanesville Times Recorder, Dec 21,
1946:
Miss Eileen Gerst of Washington is visiting her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. E. S. Gerst of 1137 Lafayette street for two weeks. She
arrived yesterday.

A note on page 10 of The Zanesville Times Recorder on 11 Sep 1946 stated:
Miss Eileen Gerst has returned to Washington D.C. after spending
a week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Gerst of 1137 Lafayette
street.
Miss Betty Mattingly of Creamery road left Sunday for Washington
D.C. where she will visit Miss Bonita Noll and Miss Eileen Gerst. She
will also spend some time with relatives in that city.

Eileen Gerst and Bonita Noll are third cousins. A year later (5 Sep 1947) the same paper reported
Miss Eileen Gerst has returned to her employement at Cincinnati
following a week-end visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. E.
Gerst of 1137 Lafayette street.

The following wedding announcement appeared in The Zanesville Times Recorder, April 21, 1952

Miss Eileen Gerst and Robert F. Strickler were married Easter
Monday in the rectory of Holy Name Catholic church, Columbus.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Gerst of 1137 Laf-
ayette street, and Mr. Strickler is the son of Mrs. Mary Strickler of
Columbus and the late Jacob Strickler.
Miss Agnes Gerst, sister of the bride, and James Morgan were
the attendants. The wedding breakfast was held at Jai Lai in Co-
lumbus.
The new Mrs. Strickler is a graduate of St. Nicholas high school
and formerly was employed by the Zanesville Publishing company.
In Columbus she is employed by North American Aviation. Mrs.
Strickler is an expediter for North American. He is a graduate of
Smithfield high school and attended Ohio State University.
The newlyweds are living at 95 Fairway Boulevard, Columbus.


Robert Allen Strickler

Birth announcement:
The son born in White Cross hospital to Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Strickler of Columbus has been named Robert
Allen Strickler. The grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. E. S.
Gerst of 1137 Lafayette street and Mrs. Mary Strickler of
Columbus.

Cletus Gerst was among 26 members of the Class of 1947 at St. Nicholas High School in Zanesville, Ohio.


Imelda Romaine Lasure

FORECAST NEW JERSEY WEDDING VOWS FOR
ROMAINE LASURE IN OCTOBER
Mr. and Mrs. Rolland Lasure, Sr. 482 Warwick
avenue are announcing the engagement and approaching
marriage of their daughter, Romaine, to Cletus Gerst, son
of Mr. and Mrs. 1137 Lafayette street.
The wedding will take place Saturday, October
7 in Sacred Heart Catholic church, Jersey City, N. J.
Miss Lasure attended St. Thomas high school and
is a member of that parish. Mr. Gerst is a graduate of St.
Nicholas high school and is a member of St. Nicholas church.
He is employed by Heiser’s Auto body shop.
First announcement of the approaching wedding was
made to a group of friends entertained Tuesday evening in the
Lasure home. A color scheme of pink and white was carried out
in the decorations and the announcement was written on a card
which Miss Pat Patterson found at her place when refreshments
were served.


Imelda Gerst's obituary appeared in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 8 Aug 2006
COLUMBUS - Imelda Romaine Gerst, 76, passed away
Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2006, at Mount Carmel West Hospital.
She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella in Zanesville.
Romaine will be remembered for her generosity and kindness
to others, bingo evenings out with good friend Marie, days at
the pool with Lynne and her homemade cookies, as well as
taking care of her grandchildren.
She is survived by husband of 55 years, Cletus; children,
Janice, Janine (Rick) Doran, Jerry (Debbie), Joe (Darin), Julie,
Joyce (David) Kitsmiller and Jim (Stacey); her sister, Kathleen
Davis of Florida; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Dee and
Jack Wilcox, Marilyn and Bill Knight, Eileen and Bob Strickler,
and Jeanette and Chuck Allton; 11 grandchildren, Brandon,
Amanda, Kyle, Kevin, Vince, Sam, Brianne, Bailey, David, An-
drew and Patrick; great-grandchildren, Blake and Brooklyn;
and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by parents, Roland and
Lillian Bollinger Lasure; a son, Jeffrey Michael; four brothers;
and three sisters.
Funeral Mass was held Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006. Private
inurnment at a later date. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish
may contribute in memory of Romaine to Mount Carmel Hos-
pice, 1144 Dublin Road, Columbus, OH 43215. Arrangements
entrusted to the John Quint Treboni Funeral Home, 1177 West
Fifth Ave., Columbus.

Janice Lynn Gerst is the 11 month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Cletus E. Gerst, 940 Vine street. She is the granddaughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Rolland Lasure, Sr., 482 Warwick avenue, and Mr. and
Mrs. E. S. Gerst, 1137 Lafayette street. Her great-grandparents
are Mrs. Eva Gerst of Caldwell, and Mrs. and Mrs. D.A. Warner
of 1137 Lafayette street, and Mrs. Catherine Bollinger of 481
Warwick avenue.


Jeffrey Michael Gerst

Jeffrey Gerst’s obituary was published in the Newark [OH] Advocate on 25 Apr 1962:
Funeral services for Jeffrey M. Gerst, six-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Cletus Gerst, 125 N. 12th St., Newark, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday with a Mass of the Angels in St. Nicholas Catholic church, Zanesville. The Rev. Father Linus J. Dury will officiate and burial will be in Mount Olive Cemetery, Zanesville.
The child died Tuesday in Newark Hospital, where he was admitted Friday and underwent an emergency operation for appendicitis.
His father Cletus Gerst is co-owner of the Muffler Shop in Zanesville and the family moved to Newark two years ago where Mr. Gerst engaged in the operation of a similar business.
Mrs. Gerst was formerly Romaine Lasure. The parents, four sister, Janice, Janine, Julie and Joyce; two brothers, Jerry and Joseph, survive. The grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. E.S. Gerst and Mr. and Mrs. Rolland Lasure of Zanesville. Friends may call at the Hillis Funeral Home, Zanesville.


Florence Mercer

MILLER HOME SCENE OF EVENING PARTY
Miss Wilma Miller, Sharon avenue, entertained Tuesday evening [6 Aug 1940]
with a party in honor of Miss Florence Mercer, who on September 12 will become
the bride of Howard Miller, brother of the hostess. The wedding will be in St.
Nicholas Catholic Church.
A miscellaneous shower was the principal feature of the evening and there were
many nice gifts. The time was spent socially and a two-course lunch was served.
The table centerpiece was a wedding cake topped by bride and bridegroom, and there
were many flowers used as table decorations also about the home.
Those present were Misses Catherine Roll, Lillian Mercer, Lucy Butler, Clara Simeral,
Helen Mercer, Irene Crock, Dorothy Freiermuth, Bernadine Mercer, Reba Risen, Mary
Ryan, Phyllis Fulton, Agnes Habib, Virginia Miller, Rita Mercer and Mary Bronkar, Mrs.
Ruth Englehart, Mrs. Clara Morrison, Mrs. Mary Mercer, Mrs. C. A. Miller and the
hostess, Miss Miller.

REV. FATHER FRANCIS RIEHL OFFICIATES AT WEDDING OF HIS COUSIN
Rev. Father Francis Riehl of Jackson, I., a cousin of Miss Florence Mercer
officiated at her wedding to Howard Miller this morning in St. Nicholas church. The
altar was decorated with assorted flowers and there were palms on the altar steps.
Father Riehl was also celebrant of the mass following.
The bride was met at the steps of the altar by the bridegroom. The girls
in the party went to the altar from the rear of the church and the young men went
in through a side door.
Miss Mercer was beautifully gowned in white chiffon velvet, with tailored
neckline and buttons from this to the waist line. The long shirred sleeves were tight
fitting and her skirt was full in the back and ended in a train. Her white net veil was
long. Her only jewelry was a brooch, which belongs to her grandmother, Mrs. Amelia
Mercer, now 90 years of age, which she wore at her wedding 70 years ago. The bride
carried a white prayer book with white ribbon streamers and white roses tied in these.
Miss Wilma Miller, sister of the bridegroom, was maid of honor and she wore
lagune blue chiffon velvet. The bridesmaids were the bride’s sisters, Miss Bernadine
Mercer, who wore moss green chiffon velvet and miss Helen Mercer who was in
copper clay chiffon velvet, The dresses were fashioned alike and had sweetheart
necklines, short puffed sleeves and long bodice waists with floor length full skirts.
Each had a net cap to match her dress and the maid of honor carried yellow pm pons
and the two maids carried assorted flowers with yellow pom pons prevailing. Each
of the three wore pearls, which were a gift from the young couple.
George Kramer, cousin of the bride was best man and the ushers were John
Ryan and Thomas McNally.
A breakfast followed and this was served at the home of the bride’s mother,
Mrs. Mary Mercer of East Market street. Covers were laid for 25 at two tables.
Each was decorated with white clematis and on the bride’s table was the three-tier
wedding cake, topped by a bride and bridegroom.
Mr. Mau (sic) of Fulda, O., grandfather of the bridegroom was present from
out of town at the wedding and breakfast.
Later Mr. and Mrs. Miller left for a trip to Niagara Falls and Canada, and to
wear away, the bride had a black and white dress with black accessories. Upon their
return, they will welcome friends at 437 Wayne avenue, where they have their home
in readiness.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Miller were graduated from St. Nicholas Catholic high
school in 1938 and are members of the alumni. Mrs. Miller is also a member of the
Blessed Virgin sodality of the church and is secretary at the Wiles Grocery company.
Mr. Miller, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Miller of Sharon avenue, is
an employee of the Standard Oil company. He is a member of the Holy Name Society.

The following Silver Anniversary notice appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, Ohio) newspaper on September 8, 1965: ANNIVERSARY OPEN HOUSE TO BE SUNDAY Mr. and Mrs. Howard Miller of 2025 Moonlight drive will celebrate their 25th
wedding anniversary Sunday with open house from 2 until 5 p.m. The Millers, who were married in Zanesville, are members of St. Nicholas
Catholic Church. He is a salesman for Meadow Gold Dairy. Mrs. Miller is the
former Florence Mercer. The couple have five children, William of 820 Grove road, Robert of 1173
Wheeling, Ronald, stationed at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, Vicki and
James Richard, both of the home. There are three granddaughters.

ZANESVILLE - Florence Mercer Miller, 88, of Zanesville, died at 10:05
a.m. Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at her residence following a long illness.
She was born Wednesday, Oct. 22, 1919, in Cambridge, the daughter
of Earl and Mary May Kessler Mercer. She married Howard W. Miller on
Sept. 12, 1940, and was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church.
Florence retired in 1984 from Terrace IGA following 25 years service
and was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.
Florence is survived by her husband of 67 years; one daughter, Vicki
(Peter) Rapol of Nashport; four sons, Howard "Bill" (Marie) Miller of Lan-
caster, Bob (Barb) Miller of Zanesville, Ronald (Karen) Miller of Zanesville
and Rick (Eve) Miller of McKinleyville, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-
grandchildren; two sisters, Rita (Wayne) Griener of Zanesville and Helen
Palmer-Osborne of Bakersfield, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, William "Bill"
Mercer; five sisters, Florence Mercer, Dorothy Lewellen, Lillian Jones,
Elizabeth Smith and Bernadine Michel.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 1, at the Hillis
& Hardwick Funeral Home, 935 Forest Ave., where a Christian vigil will be
held at 3:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m.
Friday, May 2, 2008, at St. Nicholas Catholic Church with Father Leo
Connolly as celebrant. Burial will follow in Mount Olive Cemetery.

Wilma Margaret Miller

The following wedding announcement appeared in The Times Recorder (Zanesville, OH) newspaper on August 5, 1941: WILMA MILLER AND DONALD FULTON EXCHANGE VOWS Rev. Father Earl Holtzapfel officiated at the wedding of Miss Wilma Miller and Donald Fulton, which took place in St. Nicholas Catholic church Monday morning. The organ music was presented by Miss Virginia Spangler and the bride wore a lovely dress of white bridal satin, with long train and at the neckline was a 100 year old brooch of amethyst and diamonds. Her veil was fingertip length. The bride carried gardenias and white roses. The attendants were Mr. and Mrs. Howard Miller, the brother and sister-in-law of the bride. An orchid mousseline-de-sole dress was worn by Mrs. Miller and it had a high neckline. The long puffed sleeves had points over the hands and the gown had a long train. Her flowers were white gladioli and yellow roses. Breakfast was served at the home of the bride's parent's, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Miller of Sharon avenue and the guests were the members of the immediate families. The decorations were attractive as were those used at the reception during the afternoon at the Miller home. Mr. and Mrs. Fulton will reside at 10861/2 Eastman street. Mrs. Fulton attended St. Philomena, and St. Ursula's academy in Caldwell and graduated from St. Nicholas high school in this city. For the past two years she has been employed as clerk at Habib & Co. store. Mr. Fulton who graduated from Lash high school, is a member of St. Nicholas Catholic church. He is associated with the Rittberger Meat Packing Co.


Virginia B. Miller

The following wedding announcement appeared in The Zanesville (OH) Signal newspaper on April 22, 1944:
INFORMAL CEREMONY MARKS WEDDING OF MISS VIRGINIA MILLER An informal ceremony marked the wedding of Miss Virginia Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Miller of 1303 Sharon avenue to James Kessler, son of Charles Kessler of Franklin street, which was solemnized early this morning in St. Nicholas Catholic church. Rev. Michael Wellnitz performed the single-ring ceremony. The couple was attended by Mr. and Mrs. Donald Fulton of the Chandlersville road. The bride was attired in a dress of lilac shade, worn with white accessories. On her shoulder was pinned a corsage of yellow Jonathan roses. The matron of honor was dressed in a purple suit worn with white accessories. Her corsage was of pink roses and carnations. A wedding dinner for 15 members of the immediate family was served this noon and a reception was held this afternoon at the home of the bride's parents. The bride attended St. Nicholas high school and is a member of St. Nicholas church. For the past three years she has been employed at the Schwallie grocery store on Sharon avenue. The bridegroom attended Lash high school and is also a member of St. Nicholas church. He recently received a medical discharge from the army and is now employed by the Standard Oil company.
