Notes

Adolph Burkhard

In 1900, Adolph Burkhard (36) rented a farm near Barnesville, in Wayne Twp., Belmont County, Ohio where he lived with his wife of 14 years, Catherine (33) and daughter Angela (9). Angela attended school. Sharing the home was Adolph's younger brother, Joseph, his wife, Elizabeth and their daughter. The maiden name of both Elizabeth and Catherine was Arnold. It is not known how they were related.

In 1910, Adolph Burkhart (46) owned a farm near Bellaire, Somerset Twp., Belmont County, Ohio. Living with him was his wife Katherine (42) and one of their two children, Angela (19).

Adolph Burkhart was not found in Ohio in the 1920 or 1930 census index.

When he signed as the informant on the death certificate of his wife, Adolph clearly spelled his last name "Burkhart".

of the Assumption Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m. at Ozark later, with Rev.

He was born in Monroe county June 24, 1863, the son of George and
Magadeline Weber Burkhard. His wife, Catherine Tuefel Burkhard, died
several years ago. He is survived by two daughters, Miss Mary Burkhard
of Ozark, and Mrs. Grant Scott of this city, two granddaughters, and a great-
granddaughter, three sisters, Mrs. Harry Flowers, Barnesville, Mrs. Mary
Burkhard, Ozark, and Miss Elizabeth Burkhard, Ozark, and a brother, G. C.,
Ozark.

Catherine M. Arnold

Sources conflict on maiden name. Researcher Michael Burkhard states tht her maiden name is Arnold, but Adolph's obituary refers to his late wife as Catherine Teufel Burkhart.

According to the 1900 census, Catherine was born in West Virginia to German-born parents. By 1910, Catherine Burkhard had given birth to two children, both of whom were living. However, only one child, Angelam resided with Catherine and Adolph at the time of the census.

Mary Elizabeth Burkhard

In 1900, 1910, and 1930 Mary Burkhard lived on the farm of her brother George Burkhart in Sunsbury Twp., Monroe County, Ohio. No occupation was listed for Mary.

William Phillip Tucker Jr.

In 1930, Phillip Tucker (26) rented a house at 306 Fairywood St. in Pittsburgh for $30 a month. He lived there with his with his wife Margaret A. (25) and son Phillip A. (1). The family owned a radio set. Phillip Sr. was born in Missouri, his wife was from Czeckoslovakia, and their son was born in Pennsylvania. Phillip worked as a radio serviceman. His mother and father were born in Texas and Pennsylvania, respectively.

From David L. Tucker (son of William Philip Tucker): It's interesting how little Dad knew about his parents. He had said that his father was born in Texas. That's what's on this census, also. I found out that Granddad was born in Dallas alright -- Dallas Twp., St. Clair Co., MO. And he listed his mother's birthplace as PA. She was born in MO also, but her father and the previous three generations were from PA. Dad also provided the information for the death certificates for both of his parents. On both, the parents of the deceased, Dad's grandparents, were "unknown".

Margaret A.

Margaret came to America in 1906 and was a naturalized citizen.

Nicholas Kuhn

Sources conflict on date of birth:
1 Jul 1843 -- Wright
Aug 1844 -- 1900 census

Nick (John Nicolas) and Nicolas didnt get along, so Nicolas left home at an early age. (per a letter from Mrs. Theodore Spangler (Philomina Kuhn) to her cousin Matilda Kuhn Henricks dated February 13, 1952.)

In 1870, Nicholas Coon (25) owned property worth $700 in Bridgeport, Belmont County, Ohio. His personal possessions were valued at $200. Nicholas was born in Baden. Living with him were Virginia (21) and Annie (4) -- presumably his wife and daughter, although the 1870 census does not define relationships between members of the household. Nicholas' occupation was "works in ice house." He was a citizen of the United States. Both he and Virginia could read and write.

In 1880, Nicholas Kuhn (35) lived in Bridgeport, Rose Twp., Belmont County Ohio with his wife Anna (25) and children Annie (11), Katie (7), Willie (5), and Minnie (1). Only Annie attended school. Nicholas worked as an ice dealer.

Data in the 1880 census makes it clear that Anna is not Nicholas Kuhn's first wife:
1) There is only a 14 year age difference between Anna and the oldest daughter, Annie.
2) The mother of the three youinger children was born in Ohio; the birthplace of Annie's mother is unknown.
3) Annie was born in West Virginia; the other children were born in Ohio.

In 1900, the family owned a home on Bennett St. in Bridgeport. The household consisted of Nicholas Kuhn (55), his wife of 27 years, Anna (45), children John (29), Kate (26), and Minnie (21) and son-in-law Charles Hunter (28). Kate was married (although her surname is not given). It is presumed that Charles is Kate's husband. Nicholas was from Germany and Charles was born in West Virginia. Everyone else in the household was a native of Ohio. Nicholas was an ice merchant. John worked as a time-keeper at a mill (?), and Charles was a bookkeeper.

Safronia December

All notes are from Andy Miller:
Sources conflict on date of birth:
14 Oct 1844 -- church records at Trulben, Germany
22 Mar 1844 -- death certificate

Also known as Veronica. Nickname was "Fronnie" (a common nickname for Veronica).

Sarofina had an “interesting” if not checkered past, judging by the fact that she had children by three different marriages/fathers. Safronia was obviously married at least once, maybe twice, before she married Theodore Utsinger, circa 1878. (previous husbands: Kuhn/Scott)

Sometime before 1861 she married Nicholas Kuhn, son of John (or Peter) and Catherine (Beckerich) Kuhn, with whom she had at least her two eldest children: Ann and John William Kuhn. (On John William Kuhn’s death certificate of April, 1937, his father is listed as Nicholas Kuhn.)

It is not known what happened with that marriage, but both Safronia and Nicholas Kuhn went on to remarry. (There ought to be some record of a church dissolution or divorce in the Burkhart Church records, and/or the Monroe County court records.)

Grandma Edna Kuhn Masciarelli or Richard Scott said that Nicholas Kuhn (1843-1908) was said to have been married three times. He and his last wife Anna moved to Bridgeport, Pease Township, Belmont County, Ohio. That answers the question about Safronia’s eldest two children, but leaves the son Joseph Scott’s paternity unanswered. Who was Joseph Scott’s father?

On the 1870 census Marion Township, Noble County, Safronia is listed with her parents and her first three children. When asked about Safronia Utsinger, Grandma Edna remembers her and her son John W. Kuhn who lived at “Doherty”, but she doesn’t remember who John Kuhn’s father was. (John W. Kuhn’s death certificate lists Nicholas Kuhn (1843-1908) as his father.) Nicholas Kuhn moved to Bridgeport, Ohio, and was never as “close” with his family as his other brothers were. That alone may say something.

Ultimately, Sarofina married Theodore Utsinger sometime before or circa 1878.

At the time of the 1920 census, 75 year old widow Fronnie Utsinger lived in the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Frank Crum, at 522 Luck Ave. in Zanesville, Ohio. The census states that Fronnie was born in Germany and was a naturalized citizen. The year of immigration is given as 1946 and the year of naturalization is 1965. One can only assume that the census taker intended to write "1846" and "1865" respectively. Fronnie could not read or write.

Safronia Utsinger’s obituary was published in the “Zanesville Signal” on Wednesday, 21 June 1922, p.5

“An Aged Woman is Called by Death”
An illness from a complication of diseases resulted
in the death of Mrs. Safronia Utsinger, aged 78, which occurred
at 1 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at the home of her daughter,
Mrs. J. F. Crum, 522 Luck Avenue. She had been ill for the past
fourteen weeks. Mrs. Utsinger was a native of Germany and
formerly resided at Summerfield, but for the past six years had
made her home with her daughter here (Zanesville).
Mrs. Utsinger was a member of the St. Thomas Catholic
Church and besides the daughter with whom she made her home
she is survived by the following other children: Joseph Scott of
Woodsfield, John Kuhn of Doherty, Mrs. Caroline Bailey of Pratt,
Kansas; one sister, Mrs. Barbara Willey of Summerfield, and by
sixteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.
The body was removed to the People’s morgue and
prepared for burial and will be taken to Burkhart Station Thursday
morning where services will be conducted at the Catholic Church
there.

Theodore died in 1899, according to his tombstone. Safronia died on 20 June 1922, Zanesville. They are both buried in the Chapel Hill Cemetery, next to her parents, John and Anna December.

Ann Kuhn

Listed on the 1870 census with her mother “Frannie Coon” in the home of her grandparents John and Ann December, in Marion Township, Noble County. She did not appear in either her grandparents household in 1880 or in the Utsinger household in 1880. Perhaps she died as a youth, or got married young. She is not listed as a surviving child her her mother's 1922 obituary.
