Justina Elizabeth Burkhard

In 1930, 22 year old Justina Burkhard lived with her parents and several siblings in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. She was employed as an assistant in a dental office.

The following note appeared in the Chit Chat column on page 8 of The Zanesville Signal on 9 Jul 1947:
Mrs. Carl Himmelspach and Mrs. E. J. Pfeffer, both of Barnesville, Mrs. Leo J. Haren of 51
Southard avenue, Mrs. Nicholas Malone of Eastman street, Mrs. George Baker of Glendale
avenue, and Miss Evalena Burkhard, also of Glendale avenue, have left for a month vacation
at Los Angeles, Calif. where they will be guests of their brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs.
Henry G. Fenton. They will also attend the birthday festival held each year on Mr. Fenton's
birthday. This will be at one of his ranches, the Bandy Canyon.

The following write-up appeared in the “Generally Speaking” column of the Sunday Zanesville Signal on 27 Jul 1947:
Friends of the Burkhard sisters are looking forward to a report from their three-week
vacation at “Bandy Canyon,” ranch home of H.C. Fenton, near San Diego, Calif. You know
Mrs. Fenton is the former Justine Burkhard and she and her sisters were special guests at
Mr. Fenton’s annual Fiesta last week. Mrs. Leo Haren wrote her daughter, Mary Louise,
that more than 1,200 people were in attendance and that [actor] Jack Haley was again a
special guest.
The sisters were to have appeared on Tom Brennerman’s program and the “Queen for
a Day” program last Wednesday. In addition to Mrs. Fenton and Mrs. Haren, the sisters
include Mrs. Andrew Danner of San Diego, Miss Evalene Burkhard, Mrs. N. J. Malone, Mrs.
Carl Himmelspach and Mrs. Ernest Pfeffer of near Barnesville, and Mrs. George Baker of
this city. They will be home Wednesday.

Justina's social security number was issued in California prior to 1951. On 07 Jul 1951, the following article appeared on pg 14 of the Zanesville (Ohio) Times Recorder:
Mrs. George Baker and her sister, Miss Burkhard of 445 Glendale avenue, Mr. and Mrs.
Nick Malone of 1036 Eastman street, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Danner of Canton, Mr. and Mrs.
Raymond Burkhard, and Mrs. and Mrs. E. J. Pfeffer of Quaker City are visiting their brother-in-
law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fenton of San Diego, Calif. Leaving soon for the Fenton
home will be two other brothers-in-law and sisters of Mrs. Fenton, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Haren of
Southard Avenue, and Mrs. and Mrs. Carl Himmelspach of Barnesville.


Henry Gilbert Fenton

Dates of birth and death (from Social Security Death Index) have not been proven.

A photo of eight adult daughtrs of Theobald and Caroline (Singer) Burkhard appeared in The Zaneville Signa on 25 May 1947 accompanied by this article:

Four Zanesville sisters and two others from this vicinity are making
plans for a month’s vacation in California as the guests of their brother-
in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Fenton of San Diego. It will be
the first trip west for all of them.
The six sisters are Mrs. George Baker and Miss Eva Burkhard, both of
Glendale avenue, Mrs. Leo Haren of Southard avenue, Mrs. N. J. Malone
of Eastman street, and Mrs. Carl Himmelspach and Mrs. Ernest Pfeffer,
both of near Barnesville.
Occasion for the visit will be Mr. Fenton’s birthday at which time he
annually holds a “Fiesta” for his friends and employees. The celebration
will be held at the Fentons’ country home, “Bandy Canon” near San Diego.
Last year, more than 750 persons attended the affair including radio and
movie star Jack Haley, whose estate adjoins that of the Fentons’. The “Fiesta”
will probably be held on Sunday Jul 13. Guests will include classmates of Mr.
Fenton’s at an old country school which is on property now owned by
Fenton. The school house has been repaired and is kept in good shape for
the yearly homecomings of the former pupils who are special guests on the
Monday following the “Fiesta.” A feature store describing the ”Fiesta”
appeared in Time magazine last year.
Mr. Fenton owns the Western Salt Co. of San Diego and the Fenton Material
Co. there in addition to two ranches. A large portion of the milk for San Diego is
supplied by his H.G. Fenton dairy ranch where 800 cows are milked daily.
On the Fentons’ country estate where the sisters will visit there are eight guest
cottages, a recreation house and a cook house, besides their country home. The
Fentons’ town house is in San Diego.
In addition to the Fentons, the Ohio sisters will visit another sister, Mrs.
Andrew Denner, who recently moved to San Diego from Canton, and a brother,
Carl Burkhard of San Diego, formerly of this city.
The family, children of the late Mr. and Mrs. Theobald Burkhard of Neal avenue,
all formerly lived in Zanesville. In addition to the eight sisters and the brother in San
Diego, there are three other brothers in this city. Two brothers are deceased.
The six Ohio sisters will leave Zanesville on July 5 for Chicago where they will
board the new Santa Fe streamliner train. The entire trip will be as guests of their
brother-in-law.

Carl Theobald Burkhard

In 1920, Carl Burkhard (9) lived with his married sister Margaret Burkhard Himmelspach in Zanesville. Carl attended school that year.

In 1930, 20 year old Carl Burkhard lived with his parents and three older siblings in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. Carl worked in a radiator plant.

The following article ran in The Zanesville Times Recorder on 15 Jun 1951:
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Burkhard of San Diego, Calif., arrived Tuesday for a visit
with the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smith of 2204 North Maple
avenue and other relatives and friends in this city.

Carl Burkhard's obituary ran in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 01 Jul 1957
Funeral services for Carl Burkhard, 47, of near Escondido, Calif., will be held
today at San Diego. Burial will also take place there. Mr. Burkhard, who spent
his early life in Zanesville, and a ranch foreman, Paul Foster, were electrocuted
Wednesday while working on a sprinkler system on his ranch.

According to his sister, Agnes Burkhard Baker, Carl "was electrocuted on Justina’s and Henry’s ranch. he had six children and an electrician from San Diego was down there helping him. The electrician and Carl were both electrocuted working on a sprinkler system." [Carl's sister Justina and her husband, Henry Fenton, lived in the area of San Diego.]

The following article appeared in the Zanesville Signal on 7 Jan 1946:
MARGARET BLUE CCL TO HONOR MEMBER
Mrs. Carl Burkhard of Wheeling avenue, who will leave soon to reside in California, will be complimented with a handkerchief shower when members of the Margaret Blue Child Conservation league meets this evening at the home of Mrs. William Wolfe of 1074 Linden avenue.


Carl Frederick Himmelspach

On 5 Jun 1917. 24 year old Carl Himmelspach of 243 Moorhead Aveune, Zanesville, Ohio filled out a U.S. draft registration card. He gave his birth date and place as 7 Dec 1892, Zanesville, Ohio. He indicated that he worked as a shearman in the American Rolling Mill. He was described as being tall and slender with grey eyes and medium dark hair and no obvious physical disabilities.

In 1920, 27 year old Carl Himmelspach rented a home at 222 Lindsay Ave. in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio with his wife Margaret (28). Also living with them were two of Margaret's younger siblings, Dorothy (16) and Carl (9), both of whom attended school. Carl Himmelspach and his parents were born in Ohio. He was employed as a shearman in a sheet mill.

At the time of the 1930 census, Carl F. (38) and Margaret E. (39) Himmelspach owned a house worth $8000 in Zanesville. (No address is given in the census.) Carl was employed as a mill worker in a sheet metal plant. The couple did not own a radio set.

Miss Mary Louise Haren of 51 Southard avenue is spending some time in New York City,
caring for her uncle Carl Himmelspach, a patient at Memorial hoispital there. His condidtion
is critical. Miss Haren is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Haren and is a nurse at Good
Samaritan Hospital.


Margaret Estella Burkhard

From the “Service Record” column of the Zanesville Signal, on 18 Mar 1944:
Corp. William A. Bee has been transferred from Camp
Hood, Texas to Camp Hook, Calif. His wife, the former
Miss Bernice Baker, is making her home with Mr. and
Mrs. Carl Himmelspach of Buckeye Lake.

[Mrs. Carl Himmelspach was the former Margaret E. Burkhard, aunt of Bernice Baker Bee.]


From The Zanesville Times Recorder, 6 May 1950:
Miss Evalene Burkhard of 545 Glendale avenue, and her sisters, Mrs.
Carl Himmelspach and Mrs. E.J. Pepper, both of Barnesville, and Mrs.
Dorothy Denner of Cantonhave returned to their homes after spending a
few days in New York City.

The draft registration card filled out by Carl Himmelspach on 5 Jun 1917 lists an unnamed wife and child as dependants. The child does not appear with the family in the 1920 or 1930 census, and is presumed to have died.


Nicholas Joseph Malone

In 1930, 46 year old Nicholas J. Malone rented a house at 668 Lee St. in Zanesville for $15 a month. He lived there with his wife Genevieve (37) and children Clara D. (15), Rheda M. (14), Regina C. (12), Mary L. (9), Allena G. (7), Joseph N. (5), Michael W. (3), and James E. (1). All of the girls attended school. Nick worked as a photographer. Like most of their neighbors, the Malones did not own a radio set.

A note in the "Chit Chat" section of The Zanesville Signal (pg 2) on 26 Apr 1943 said:
Misses Rita, Mary and Jean Malone of Washington,
D.C. have returned after a short visit with their parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas Malone of Eastman street.

The following anniversary announcement was published in the Zanesville Signal on 11 Nov 1973, accompanied by a photo of the couple:
THE MALONES TO CELEBRATE 60TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas J. Malone of 1036 Eastman
street, will be honored with an open house on Sunday,
Nov. 18 in celebration of their 60th wedding anniversary.
The reception will be held at the Knights of Columbus
Hall. Hours will be from 3 until 5 p.m. with their sons
and daughters serving as hosts and hostesses.
The Malones were married Nov. 15 1913 in the
Immaculate Conception Church at Barnesville. Mrs.
Malone is the former Genevieve Burkhard whose
parents were Mr. and Mrs. Theobald Burkhard. Mr.
Malone’s parents were Mr. and Mrs. Michael Malone
of Temperanceville.
Mr. Malone was a photographer before he retired.
He later worked at the old Ideal Studio.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Malone are members of St.
Nicholas Catholic Church.
The Malones are the parents of five daughters,
Mrs. Henry (Clara) Synan of 210 Anthony lane, Mrs.
John (Rita) Wagner of 3080 Brookside drive, Mrs.
Robert (Mary) McCarty of 1329 Pallas avenue, Mrs.
Donald (Alma) Miller of 1306 Greenwood avenue
and Mrs. Richard (Jean) Quinn of Prairie Village,
Kan., and four sons, Joseph W. of 1053 Alice street,
Patrick of the home, Michael of Marble Cliff and
James of Gahanna.
There are 41 grandchildren and 17 great-grand-
children.

Julius Vincent Burkhard

The following note appeared in the Zanesville Signal on 11 Oct 1941:
Building permits were obtained yesterday at the service
director's office by Julius V. Burkhard, 1665 Hoge avenue,
to build a garage at a cost of $100.

On 19 Feb 1953, the Zanesville Times Recorder (pg 8) reported in a Real Estate Transfers article "Julius and Margaret Burkhard to William Steed, two parcels in Norwood addition."


Rita Lorraine Burkhard

Rita Burkhard's obituary appeared in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 26 Jul 1957. A photo of Rita accompanied the article.

BURHARD RITES ARE SATURDAY
Solemn mass is to be celebrated at 10 o'clock Saturday morning in St. Nicholas
Catholic church for Miss Rita Lorraine Burkhard, 23, of 1133 Seborn avenue who
died Wednesday afternoon [27 Jul 1957] in Good Samaritan hospital after a lingering
illness.
Interment is to follow in Mt. Olive Cemetery. Friends are being received at the
Putnam chapel of the Bolin-Bryan funeral home. Miss Burkhard was a graduate of
Rosencrans high and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Burkhard.


Raymond Richard Burkhard

In 1930, 33 year old Raymond R. Burkhard owned a home worth $4500 at 320 Brookover Ave in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio. He lived there with his wife Wilma A. (27), and children Bonnie M. (7), and John R. (3). Bonnie attended school. Also living in the house were three lodgers, the Webster family. The Burkhard family owned a radio set. Raymond was employed as a molder at a radiator factory. Raymond's sister, Agnes Burkhard Baker, lived around the corner on Glendale Ave.
