Ernest Joseph Pfeffer

In 1910, newlyweds Earnest (22) and Amy (21) Pfeffer rented a farm in Beaver Twp., Noble County, Ohio. Ernest was born in Ohio to German-born parents. They shared their dwelling with the family of Joe Hughs.

At the time of the 1920 census, Earnest J. Pfeffer (31) owned a farm in Somerset Twp., Belmont County, Ohio. He lived there with his wife Amy and children Joseph (9), Madeline M. (4), and Carl F (3 yrs 1 mo). Only Joseph attended school. The Pfeffer shared their farm with the Hayes family. The farm next to Ernest's was that of 70 year old Joseph Pfeffer.

In 1930, Ernest (42) and Amy (40) Pfeffer owned a farm worth $5000 in Somerset Twp. where they lived with their four children: Joseph (19), Mary M. (15), Carl (13), and Caroline (5 yrs 2 mos). Mary and Carl attended school. Unlike most of their neighbors, the Pfeffer family owned a radio set.

Ernest Pfeffer's obituary appeared on pg 5 C of The Zanesville Times Recorder on 31 Oct 1963:
BARNESVILLE -- Ernest Joseph (Jim) Pfeffer, 75, of near Temperanceville died at
7:30 a.m. Wednesday at his home after suffering an apparent heart attack. Mr. Pfeffer
was born in Somerset Township near Temperanceville Dec 31, 1887 a son of Joseph and
Aunigunda Kronenbitter Pfeffer. He was a retired farmer. Mr. Pfeffer married the
former Amy Burkhard on Aug 31, 1909.
Surviving are his widow of the home, a son, Joseph T. Pfeffer of Escondido, Calif.,
two daughters, Mrs. Madeline Schumacher of Woodsfield, and Mrs. Caroline Reichman of
Quaker City Route 4; three sisters, Mrs. Louise Gallagher of Quaker City Route 4, Mrs.
Rose Hughes and Mrs. Eva Gallagher, both of Barnesville; 20 grandchildren and nine great-
grandchildren. Two sons preceded him in death.
Mr. Pfeffer was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Temperanceville. Friends
may call at Campbell Funeral Home in Barnesville after 1 p.m. Friday. Rosary will be
recited at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Services will be held at St. Mary's Church
at 10 a.m. with Father Donald Swendemman officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery
at Temperanceville.


Amy Eleanor Burkhard

According to Agnes Burkhard Baker, "When Amy was educated high enough to teach school she had to go on horseback to Bethesda and when she came back she had a two-year certificate to teach school. She was a school teacher and, well, she wasn‘t no housekeeper."

Miss Evalene Burkhard of 545 Glendale avenue, and her sisters, Mrs.
Carl Himmelspach and Mrs. E.J. Pepper, both of Barnesville, and Mrs.
Dorothy Denner of Cantonhave returned to their homes after spending a
few days in New York City.

Amy Pfeffer Burkhard's obituary appeared in the Zanesville Times Recorder on 31 Oct 1966:
Mrs. Amy E. Pffeffer, 77, of Quaker City Route 4 died at 11 a.m. Sunday (Oct. 30)
at Good Samaritan Hospital following a long illness. Born Aug. 31, 1889 in Ozark, she
was a daughter of David and Caroline Burkhard. Her husband, E. J. Pfeffer, died in 1963.
She was a member of Temperanceville St. Mary's Catholic Church ant its Catholic
Women's Club.
Surviving are a son, Joseph of Escondido, Calif; two daughters, Mrs. Madeline
Schumaker of Woodsfield and Mrs. Caroline Reischman of Quaker City Route 4; six
sisters, Mrs. Agnes Baker 545 Glendale avenue, Mrs. N. J. (Genevieve) Malone 1036
Eastman street, Miss Evelene Burkhard of 920 Locust avenue, Mrs. Dorothy Danner
of Canton, Mrs. Margaret Himmelspach of Barnesville Route 2 and Mrs. Justina Fenton
of San Diego Calif.; three brothers, Julius D. Burkhard of 1133 Seborn avenue, A. W.
Burkhard of 2015 Neil avenue and Raymond of Canton; 20 grandchildren; 19 great-
grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Two sons are deceased.
The body was taken to Campbell Funeral Home in Barnesville where friends may call
after 7 p.m. today. The Catholic Women's Club will hold services at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday.
Rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Services will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's
Catholic Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Walter William Schumacher

In 1930, 16 year old Walter W. Schumacher was a student at the College of St. Charles Barromes in Marion Twp., Franklin County, Ohio. He and his parents were natives of Ohio.

Walter Schumacher was a resident of Monroe County, Ohio at the time of his death.

The following wedding announcement was published in the Zanesville Signal on 29 Aug 1937:
MISS PFEFFER IS TO BE BRIDE OF WOODSFIELD MAN
Many Guests From This City Will Attend Wedding Tuesday at Temperanceville
A wedding of interest here is that of Miss Madeline
Pfeffer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Pfeffer of Tem-
peranceville, and Walter Schumacher of Woodsfield,
son of Mrs. Clara Schumacher, which will take place
Tuesday morning at the Catholic church in Temper-
anceville.
Miss Pfeffer is a niece of Mrs. George N. Baker of
Glendale avenue and a granddaughter of Mrs. D.T.
Burkhard of Neil avenue. She has visited here
frequently, and has many friends in this city.
Rev. Fr. Bauer, formerly of St. Nicholas church
here, will perform the ceremony. Miss Rita Malone
of Eastman street will be bridesmaid and the bride-
groom’s brother, Herman Schumacher, will be best
man.
The young couple will make their home near
Woodsfield.
Going from this city to the wedding will be Mr.
and Mrs. George N. Baker and their daughter,
Bernice Baker and a son, Bernard Baker, Mr.
and Mrs. N. J. Malone and daughter Marion Jean
Malone, Mr. and Mrs. Julius Burkhard and son,
Raymond Burkhard; Mr. and Mrs. Alphonse Burk-
hard, Mr. and Mrs. Leo J. Haren, Mrs. D.T. Burkhard,
Miss Evelyn Burkhard, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Himmels-
pach of Thornville will also attend the wedding. They
will join the group here to go to Temperanceville.


Margaret Schumacher

WOODSFIELD - Margaret Schumacher, 14, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Schumacher of Woodsfield is still
missing since Oct. 16 and appeals have been made to
persons knowing anything of the girl’s whereabouts to
notify the Monroe county sheriff’s office.


Walter Bee

Obituary of Walter Bee from the Zanesville Times Recorder, 19 Jul 1973
LANCASTER - Walter D. Bee, 87, of Columbus, died
at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Lancaster Homestead
Nursing Home.
Born June 17, 1886, in Marysville, he was a son of
William and May Kezerita Bee.
Mr. Bee was retired city and state employee in
Columbus.
Surviving are two sons, William Bee of Lancaster,
former Zanesville resident and Robert S. Bee of
Dayton; one daughter, Mr. John Rice of Fairfield,
Conn.; four grandchildren and three great-grand-
children. Private service will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Friday at the Sheridan Funeral Home, Lancaster.
Burial will be in the Sunset Memorial Park, Colum-
bus.


Alonzo M. Martin

In 1900, Alonzo Martin (37) and his wife of 10 years, Minnie (37), owned a home in Warren Twp., Belmont Co., Ohio. According to the census, Minnie had given birth to three children, all of whom lived in the household: Fred J. (9), Amy K. (8) and Delina J. (5). All three children attended school. Alonzo was employed as a laborer for the railroad.

Caroline Kunigunde Pfeffer

Caroline K. Reischman, 74, 485 North Street,
Barnesville, died Saturday, April 17, 1999 at Barnesville
Hospital. She was born February 26, 1925, in Zanesville,
the daughter of the late Ernest Joseph and Amy Eleanor
Burkhead Pfeffer. She was a member of St. Mary's Cath-
olic Church, Temperanceville, and the Catholic Women's
Club.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in
death by her husband, Lawrence Leo Reischman; two
brothers, Joseph and Carl Pfeffer and a sister, Madeline
Schumacher.
Surviving are a son, David L. Reischman of Barnes-
ville; four daughters, Ann Snider of Jerusalem, Mary Scott
of Senecaville, Patty Detling of North Lewisburg, and
Rebecca Reischman of Westerville; seven grandchildren
and five great grandchildren.
Friends will be received Tuesday from 3 to 5 and 7
to 9 p.m. at the Campbell-Plumly-Milburn Funeral Home,
Barnesville. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wed-
nesday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Temper-
anceville, with the Rev. Virgil Reischman officiating.
Burial follows in St. Marys Cemetery, Temperanceville.
Vigil services will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. in the funeral home.
